{"id":68484,"date":"2024-01-28T19:07:18","date_gmt":"2024-01-28T19:07:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=68484"},"modified":"2024-01-28T19:07:18","modified_gmt":"2024-01-28T19:07:18","slug":"pop-goes-the-ecowas-balloon-as-mali-niger-burkina-faso-break-rank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=68484","title":{"rendered":"Pop goes the ECOWAS balloon as Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso break rank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso announced on Sunday that they would be leaving the Economic Community of West African States \u201cwithout delay\u201d, citing the injustice of sanctions ECOWAS levied on each country following takeovers by military juntas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Though it says it is aware of the announcement, the ECOWAS says it has not received any official communication from any of the three countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger announced on Sunday their immediate withdrawal from the West African bloc ECOWAS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The leaders of the three Sahel nations issued a statement saying it was a \u201csovereign decision\u201d to leave the Economic Community of West African States \u201cwithout delay\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Struggling with jihadist violence and poverty, the regimes have had tense ties with ECOWAS since coups took place in Niger last July, Burkina Faso in 2022 and Mali in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">All three were suspended from ECOWAS with Niger and Mali facing heavy sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">They have hardened their positions in recent months and joined forces in an \u201cAlliance of Sahel States\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">A French military withdrawal from the Sahel \u2014 the region along the Sahara desert across Africa \u2014 has heightened concerns over the conflicts spreading southward to the Gulf of Guinea states Ghana, Togo, Benin and Ivory Coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The prime minister appointed by Niger\u2019s military regime on Thursday blasted ECOWAS for \u201cbad faith\u201d after the bloc largely shunned a planned meeting in Niamey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Niger had hoped for an opportunity to talk through differences with fellow states of ECOWAS which has cold-shouldered Niamey, imposing heavy economic and financial sanctions following the military coup that overthrew elected president Mohamed Bazoum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">An ECOWAS statemen, however, said: &#8220;The attention of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS Commission) has been drawn to a statement broadcast on the National Televisions of Mali and Niger announcing the decision of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger to withdraw from ECOWAS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cThe ECOWAS Commission is yet to receive any direct formal notification from the three Member States about their intention to withdraw from the Community .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cThe ECOWAS Commission, as directed by the Authority of Heads of State and Government, has been working assiduously with these countries for the restoration of constitutional order.
