{"id":67523,"date":"2023-11-13T13:08:14","date_gmt":"2023-11-13T13:08:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=67523"},"modified":"2023-11-13T13:08:14","modified_gmt":"2023-11-13T13:08:14","slug":"david-cameron-bounces-back-as-uk-interior-minister-braverman-is-sacked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=67523","title":{"rendered":"David Cameron bounces back as UK interior minister Braverman is sacked"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Former British Prime Minister, Mr. David Cameron, has bounced back as Foreign Secretary even as British leader Rishi Sunak on Monday sacked controversial interior minister Suella Braverman, as he reshuffles his top team ahead of a general election expected next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67524\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67524\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67524\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/download-6-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"255\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67524\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Braverman (feature photo above) and below, Cameron.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">James Cleverly replaces Braverman and Cameron took his place. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">On X, Cameron called his new boss a \u201cstrong and capable prime minister who is showing exemplary leadership at a difficult time\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The new foreign secretary said he \u201cgladly accepted\u201d the offer, despite having \u201cdisagreed with some individual decisions by his successor\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cI want to help him to deliver the security and prosperity our country needs and be part of the strongest possible team that serves the United Kingdom and that can be presented to the country when the general election is held,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Sunak had come under growing pressure to axe Braverman, an outspoken right-winger, after critics accused her of heightening tensions during weeks of contentious pro-Palestinian demonstrations and counter-protests in Britain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">It was not immediately clear who will replace Braverman, who was appointed to the post when Sunak became prime minister just over a year ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Following her dismissal, Braverman said \u201cit has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as home secretary\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cI will have more to say in due course,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The firing comes as the ruling Conservatives confirmed a major reshuffle of Sunak\u2019s top ministers was underway \u2014 his first since becoming the country\u2019s leader on October 25, 2022.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cHere we go,\u201d the party said on X, formerly Twitter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cToday @RishiSunak strengthens his team in government to deliver long-term decisions for a brighter future. Stay tuned for the latest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The changes, set to be announced through the morning, are expected to reward loyalists and younger emerging MPs, after nearly 14 years in power takes its toll on the Tories\u2019 popularity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The party has trailed the main Labour opposition by double-digit margins throughout Sunak\u2019s time in power, and is widely tipped to lose the next election due next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Braverman had stoked controversy throughout her tenure, taking a hardline stance on immigration in particular and regularly wading into so-called culture wars issues which are seen as dividing the electorate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The right-winger attacked her critics as liberal \u201ctofu-eating wokerati\u201d while saying shortly after she was appointed that sending asylum seekers to Rwanda was her \u201cdream\u201d and \u201cobsession\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">But her position became increasingly untenable after she last week wrote an explosive newspaper article, apparently without Sunak\u2019s approval, accusing police of bias towards left-wing causes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">It was blamed for stoking tensions ahead of a weekend of protests over Israel\u2019s war in Gaza, which coincided with Armistice Day events, and prompted calls for her to be sacked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u25cf Additional report by AFP<\/span><!--\/data\/user\/0\/com.samsung.android.app.notes\/files\/clipdata\/clipdata_bodytext_231113_134416_971.sdocx--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former British Prime Minister, Mr. David Cameron, has bounced back as Foreign Secretary even as British leader Rishi Sunak on Monday sacked controversial interior minister Suella Braverman, as he reshuffles his top team ahead of a general election expected next year.
