{"id":6726,"date":"2017-12-25T19:15:24","date_gmt":"2017-12-25T19:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=6726"},"modified":"2017-12-25T19:15:24","modified_gmt":"2017-12-25T19:15:24","slug":"liberian-boxing-day-presidential-run-off-ex-president-jonathan-calls-for-peaceful-process-urges-candidates-to-accept-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=6726","title":{"rendered":"Liberian Boxing Day Presidential run-off: Ex-President Jonathan calls for peaceful process, urges candidates to accept results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former President Goodluck Jonathan who is currently on election duty<br \/>\nin Liberia has called for a free and fair ahead of the Boxing Day<br \/>\nPresidential run-off and advised the two presidential candidates to be<br \/>\nready to accept the result of the elections in the interest of peace.<br \/>\nThe former President is serving as the co- leader of the delegation of<br \/>\nthe United States\u2019 National Democratic Institute (NDI) International<br \/>\nElections Observation Mission to Liberia\u2019s presidential polls.<br \/>\nThe run-off election is being contested by the ruling Unity Party candidate and current Vice President, Joseph Nyumah Boakai, and the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) candidate, George<br \/>\nWeah.<br \/>\nJonathan who alongside Atifete Jahjaga, former president of Kosovo and other NDI leaders met separately with both Weah and Boakai urged them to appeal to their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully during the Boxing Day polls and further reminded them that the future of their country depended on the outcome\u00a0 run off.<br \/>\nHe said, \u201cIn any election, there are winners and losers. Only one presidential candidate will be declared winner. The other should accept the election results to avoid a political crisis, especially if there are no good grounds to challenge the outcome.\u201d<br \/>\nA statement issued by Jonathan&#8217;s media adviser Mr. Ikechukwu Eze said<br \/>\nthe former President also urged the political parties, the National<br \/>\nElectoral Commission, and security outfits to play their roles, to<br \/>\nensure a peaceful, inclusive and transparent electoral process.<br \/>\nJonathan also noted that Nigeria and other West African nations played<br \/>\nvital roles in stabilizing the nation, urging Liberians not to do anything that could jeopardise the post-war peace in the land.<br \/>\nHe further said: \u201cThe economy of Liberia will benefit immensely from a positive and peaceful outcome, as a free and fair process would go a long way in reassuring investors that the country is now safe for lasting investment.<br \/>\n\u201cIf the election fails it means Liberia has failed, it also means that<br \/>\nLiberia has failed West Africa and failed the entire Africa.\u201d<br \/>\nAlthough both candidates pointed out some lapses in the preparations, especially with the issue of the voter register, they however agreed to accept the outcome of the results.<br \/>\nSpeaking on his preparedness to accept the outcome, weah said: \u201cIf the<br \/>\nLiberian people decide that the other side will have another twelve years in the Presidency, we will call and congratulate them. But as I said, if the election is free and fair, we are going to win. This is because we have worked so hard and our people want the change which we<br \/>\nare offering.\u201d<br \/>\nThe former President and the NDI team also met with chairman of the<br \/>\nNational Elections Commission (NEC) Jerome George Korkoya and emphasized the need for a transparent, free and fair elections.<br \/>\nLast week Jonathan noted that the elections \u201drepresent a historic<br \/>\nmoment for Liberia, as the country will have the first opportunity for<br \/>\na peaceful transfer of power from one democratically-elected president<br \/>\nto another.
