{"id":66533,"date":"2023-09-13T12:35:08","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T12:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=66533"},"modified":"2023-09-13T12:35:08","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T12:35:08","slug":"at-least-5000-dead-in-libya-thousands-missing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=66533","title":{"rendered":"At least 6,000 dead in Libya, fear over missing 10,0000"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_66535\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66535\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-66535\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/AP23255573235507-1694587726-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Derna after devastation (AP Photo\/Jamal Alkomaty)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 28px;\"><b>CNN: Morgues overwhelmed in Libya as rescuers search for thousands missing after flood<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Libya\u00a0is racing to bury its dead as bodies pile up in the streets of Derna, the northern coastal city devastated by flooding after a torrential downpour smashed through two dams, washing homes into the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Morgues are full in hospitals that remain out of service despite the desperate need to treat survivors of a disaster that has far so killed<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">at least 5,000 people, according to hospital staff and officials from Libya\u2019s eastern parliament-backed government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Around 10,000 more are missing, potentially either swept out to sea or buried beneath rubble that\u2019s strewn throughout the city once home to over 100,000 people, authorities say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">More than 30,000 people have been displaced by the flooding in Derna, the United Nations\u2019 International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya said Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The significant damage to infrastructure in the region has made some stricken regions inaccessible to humanitarian groups. Only two out of the seven entry points to Derna now available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Emergency teams are searching through piles of debris for survivors and bodies, as officials attempt to honor Islamic beliefs that the dead should receive burial rites within three days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cThe Martyrs\u2019 committee (has been set up to) identify the missing people and to implement procedures for identifying and burial of in accordance with Sharia and legal laws and standards,\u201d said Libya\u2019s minister of state for cabinet affairs, Adel Juma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The destruction caused by Storm Daniel has made a mammoth mission even harder for rescuers trying to clear roads and debris to find survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The storm took out communications, frustrating rescue efforts and causing anxiety among family members outside Libya who are waiting for news of missing loved ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Ayah, a Palestinian woman with cousins in Derna, said she has been unable to<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">contact them since the floods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cI\u2019m really worried about them. I have two cousins who live in Derna. It seems all communications are down and I don\u2019t know if they are alive at this point. It is very terrifying watching the videos coming out of Derna. We are all terrified,\u201d she told CNN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Libya was convulsed by the 2011 uprising against the rule of Muammar Gaddafi and ripped apart by civil war. The scale of the destruction underscores the vulnerability of a country that has for years grappled with warring factions and chaos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The UN-backed Government of National Unity (GNU), led by Abdulhamid Dbeibeh, sits in Tripoli in northwest Libya, while its eastern rival is controlled by commander Khalifa Haftar and his Libyan National Army (LNA), who support the eastern-based parliament led by Osama Hamad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Derna, which lies some 300 kilometers (190 miles) east of Benghazi, falls under the control of Haftar and his eastern administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><b>Not prepared for such a \u2018catastrophe\u2019<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Storm Daniel<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">looks to have created one of the deadliest floods on record in North Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The very strong low-pressure system moved into the Mediterranean before developing into a tropical-like cyclone and crossing the Libyan coast. Daniel also brought unprecedented flooding to Greece last week, where the death toll was much lower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The deadly storm comes in an unprecedented year of climate disasters and record-breaking weather extremes, from devastating wildfires to oppressive heat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">While the floods affected several cities across the region, Derna suffered the most damage after two dams collapsed, washing entire neighborhoods into the churning<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cLibya was not prepared for a catastrophe like that,\u201d said Osama Aly, an Emergency and Ambulance service spokesperson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><b>Countries and organizations send help<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The International Rescue Committee (IRC) said the country faces \u201can unprecedented humanitarian crisis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Ciaran Donelly, IRC\u2019s senior vice president for crisis response, said the committee is conducting a joint needs assessment to support those affected by the floods, while also appealing for the international community for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cWe must remember that Libya is not just a country in crisis; it is also a gateway for people on the move to Europe,\u201d he said. \u201cThe IRC has been working tirelessly since 2016 to provide essential healthcare and protection to vulnerable Libyans, refugees, and migrants affected by this protracted crisis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Turkish aircraft delivering humanitarian aid arrived in Libya on Tuesday, according to Turkey\u2019s Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the country would send 168 search and rescue teams and humanitarian aid to Benghazi, according to state run news agency Anadoulu Agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Italy is sending a civil defense team to assist with rescue operations, the country\u2019s Civil Protection Department said Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Tripoli announced that its special envoy, ambassador Richard Norland, had made an official declaration of humanitarian need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">This \u201cwill authorize initial funding that the United States will provide in support of relief efforts in Libya.
