{"id":66142,"date":"2023-08-22T15:52:55","date_gmt":"2023-08-22T15:52:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=66142"},"modified":"2023-08-22T15:52:55","modified_gmt":"2023-08-22T15:52:55","slug":"diezani-alison-madueke-to-appear-in-uk-court-for-100000-bribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=66142","title":{"rendered":"Diezani Alison-Madueke to appear in UK court over \u00a3100,000 bribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Former President of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been charged with bribery offences relating to her time as Nigeria\u2019s oil minister, the United Kingdom National Crime Agency (NCA) said on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Alison-Madueke, 63, has been on bail since first being arrested in London in October 2015. She will appear in court in the British capital on October 2, the NCA said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Soon after her arrest, her family\u2019s lawyer told AFP she would strongly contest corruption allegations that have dogged her during and after her time in former President Goodluck Jonathan\u2019s government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Alison-Madueke, in office from 2010 to 2015, was the first woman to be oil minister in Nigeria and the first female president of the global oil cartel OPEC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The head of the NCA\u2019s international corruption unit, Andy Kelly, said in a statement, \u201cWe suspect Diezani Alison-Madueke abused her power in Nigeria and accepted financial rewards for awarding multi-million pound contracts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The NCA said Alison-Madueke allegedly benefited from at least \u00a3100,000 ($127,000) in cash, chauffeur-driven cars, flights on private jets, luxury holidays for her family, and the use of multiple London properties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The charges also detail financial rewards including furniture, renovation work and staff for the properties, payment of private school fees, and gifts from top designer shops such as Cartier jewellery and Louis Vuitton goods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cBribery is a pervasive form of corruption, which enables serious criminality and can have devastating consequences for developing countries,\u201d Kelly said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cThese charges are a milestone in what has been a thorough and complex international investigation,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Alison-Madueke has been living in the upmarket St John\u2019s Wood area of north London since she was first arrested, and undergone chemotherapy for breast cancer, according to her family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">At the time of her arrest, the NCA said only it had detained five people in London on suspicion of international corruption, without naming those held.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The Nigerian government of Jonathan\u2019s successor Muhammadu Buhari later confirmed Alison-Madueke\u2019s arrest and said its law enforcement agencies were cooperating with their British counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Former Army General Buhari began an anti-corruption drive after taking office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The NCA said that assets worth millions of pounds in relation to the case have been frozen as part of the investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">In March, the agency, which targets international and organised crime, provided evidence to the US Department of Justice allowing them to recover assets totalling $53.1 million linked to Alison-Madueke\u2019s alleged corruption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><b>\u25aa\ufe0e <\/b>Report by<b> AFP<\/b><\/span><!--\/data\/user\/0\/com.samsung.android.app.notes\/files\/clipdata\/clipdata_bodytext_230822_164626_950.sdocx--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former President of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been charged with bribery offences relating to her time as Nigeria\u2019s oil minister, the United Kingdom National Crime Agency (NCA) said on Tuesday.
