{"id":66123,"date":"2023-08-21T14:46:55","date_gmt":"2023-08-21T14:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=66123"},"modified":"2023-08-21T14:46:55","modified_gmt":"2023-08-21T14:46:55","slug":"no-way-for-3-year-transition-ecowas-tells-junta-in-niger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=66123","title":{"rendered":"No way for 3-year transition, ECOWAS tells junta in Niger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has said that it wiuld not agree to a 3-year transition programme for the military junta in Niger to remain in place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">In an interview with the BBC on Sunday, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musah, described Tchiani\u2019s proposal as a smokescreen for dialogue and diplomacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Musah said: \u201cECOWAS is not accepting any prolonged transition again in the region. They just have to get ready to hand over in the shortest possible time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cMilitary aspect is very much on. The earlier they give power back to civilians and concentrate on their primary responsibility that is defending the territorial integrity of Niger, the better for them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Junta leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, on Saturday, said he would relinquish power within three years, warning that any intervention by foreign forces would not be \u201ca walk in the park.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">On Sunday, supporters of the military junta took to the streets of Niamey to restate their support for the military takeover of power in Niger Republic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">They chanted slogans hostile to former colonial power France and West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, which is considering a potential military operation to reinstate elected president Mohamed Bazoum if ongoing negotiations with coup leaders fail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Although the Sahel state\u2019s new military leaders have officially banned protests, in practice, those in support of the coup are allowed to go ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">According to AFP, the demonstrators waved placards saying \u201cStop the military intervention\u201d and \u201cNo to sanctions\u201d, in reference to the financial and trade restrictions imposed by ECOWAS four days after the coup on July 26.<\/span><!--\/data\/user\/0\/com.samsung.android.app.notes\/files\/clipdata\/clipdata_bodytext_230821_154247_333.sdocx--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has said that it wiuld not agree to a 3-year transition programme for the military junta in Niger to remain in place.
