{"id":66116,"date":"2023-08-20T17:34:28","date_gmt":"2023-08-20T17:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=66116"},"modified":"2023-08-20T17:34:28","modified_gmt":"2023-08-20T17:34:28","slug":"buhari-grieves-over-36-officers-soldiers-were-killed-in-niger-ambush-helicopter-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=66116","title":{"rendered":"Buhari grieves over 36 officers, soldiers killed in Niger ambush, helicopter crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has joined the company of Nigerians grieving over the killing of 36 officers and soldiers in Niger State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">On his X handle (Twitter), it said: &#8220;His Excellency, @MBuhari has expressed his anguish over the death of several soldiers who were killed in an ambush, and a subsequent helicopter crash in Niger State.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Recall that the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) provided details on the soldiers killed in an ambush and the crash of the\u00a0Nigerian Air Force (NAF)\u00a0MI17 helicopter on Monday in Niger State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The Director, Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, while briefing journalists on Thursday, said that a total of 36 officers and soldiers were involved in the two incidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Mr Buba, a major general, said that three officers and 22 soldiers paid the supreme price in the ambush in Zungeru general area while seven were wounded in action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">He explained that the NAF helicopter was on a mission to evacuate the deceased and wounded troops when it crashed in the Chukuba area of Shiroro Local Government Area of the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">He said the crashed helicopter was conveying 14 bodies of the previously killed soldiers and the seven wounded ones as well the two pilots and two crew members on board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">In his contribution, the Director of Public Relations and Information for NAF, Edward Gabkwet, said the cause of the crash was yet to be determined, saying operations were ongoing to unravel the cause of the accident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Mr Gabkwet, an air commodore, urged the public to be wary of the kind of things they send on social media, saying they should not allow themselves to be used as communication equipment to spread propaganda by enemies of the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">He said the military had continued to be open about its operations, adding that accidents in military operations were nothing to be ashamed of, as an organisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cWe are fighting an insurgency and if anybody thinks insurgency is something that is tackled in such an easy way, then you should go back to the history books and find out how other nations have been facing the same problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201cWhat we see in other countries is the citizens of those countries rallying around their armed forces and supporting them,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--\/data\/user\/0\/com.samsung.android.app.notes\/files\/clipdata\/clipdata_bodytext_230820_183049_702.sdocx--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has joined the company of Nigerians grieving over the killing of 36 officers and soldiers in Niger State.
