{"id":63048,"date":"2023-03-16T10:50:44","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T10:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=63048"},"modified":"2023-03-16T10:50:44","modified_gmt":"2023-03-16T10:50:44","slug":"nigeria-others-face-health-worker-shortage-amid-foreign-recruitment-says-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=63048","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria, others face health workers shortage amid foreign recruitment, says WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"cs-header cs-header-stretch cs-header-one\" data-scheme=\"inverse\">\n<div class=\"cs-container\">\n<div class=\"cs-header__inner cs-header__inner-mobile\">\n<div class=\"cs-header__col cs-col-center\">\n<div class=\"cs-logo\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: 0px;\">The World Health Organisation (WHO) says Nigeria and 54 other countries are struggling with serious health worker shortages as they continue seeking better-paid opportunities in wealthier nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"cs-site-content cs-sidebar-enabled cs-sidebar-right cs-metabar-enabled section-heading-default-style-1\">\n<div class=\"cs-container\">\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"cs-main-content\">\n<div id=\"primary\" class=\"cs-content-area\">\n<div class=\"cs-entry__wrap\">\n<div class=\"cs-entry__container\">\n<div class=\"cs-entry__content-wrap\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>They continue to seek better-paid opportunities in wealthier nations that have stepped up efforts to recruit them amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.<\/p>\n<p>According to WHO, African nations have been worst hit by the phenomenon, with 37 countries on the continent facing health worker shortages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealth workers shortage has threatened their chances of achieving universal health care by 2030 \u2013 a key Sustainable Development Goals pledge,\u201d it noted.<\/p>\n<p>The actions of wealthy countries that belong to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) come under scrutiny in the WHO alert, among other regions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithin Africa, it\u2019s a very vibrant economy that is creating new opportunities,\u201d Jim Campbell, the director responsible for health worker policy at WHO, said in a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Gulf States have traditionally been reliant on international personnel, and then some of the OECD high-income countries have really accelerated their recruitment and employment to respond to the pandemic and respond to the loss of lives, the infections, the absences of workers during the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To help countries protect their vulnerable healthcare systems, WHO has issued an updated health workforce support and safeguards list, highlighting nations with low numbers of qualified healthcare staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese countries require priority support for health workforce development and health system strengthening, along with additional safeguards that limit active international recruitment,\u201d the WHO insisted.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting the call for universal healthcare for all countries in line with the SDGs, WHO Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, called on all countries to respect the provisions in the WHO health workforce support and safeguards list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealth workers are the backbone of every health system, and yet 55 countries with some of the world\u2019s most fragile health systems do not have enough, and many are losing their health workers to international migration,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Although many countries respect existing WHO guidelines on recruiting health care workers, the principle is not accepted wholesale, WHO warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are seeing is that the majority of countries are respecting those provisions (by) not actively recruiting from these (vulnerable) countries,\u201d Mr Campbell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there is also a private recruitment market that does exist, and we\u2019re looking to them to also reach some of the global standards that are anticipated in terms of their practice and behaviour.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) says Nigeria and 54 other countries are struggling with serious health worker shortages as they continue seeking better-paid opportunities in wealthier nations.
