President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sadness at the passing of Professor George Obiozor, the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, worldwide, a statement from his office has said.<\/p>\n
His spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina\u00a0 said he extends his\u00a0 heartfelt condolences to Obiozor\u2019s family, the government and people of Imo State as well as Ndigbo, at home and in the Diaspora.<\/p>\n
He described Obiozor\u2019s demise as an immeasurable loss to the country, and notes that the former Ambassador of Nigeria to the United States, High Commissioner to the Republic of Cyprus, Ambassador to the State of Israel and former Director-General, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) exemplified leadership skills and values as a thoroughbred diplomat.<\/p>\n
“The President believes that the contributions of the unique leader and strong proponent of peace and a stable polity, who also held other strategic public positions,\u00a0\u00a0will never be forgotten.<\/p>\n
“President Buhari trusts that all who mourn the demise of the statesman, who commanded great respect among his peers in the academia and foreign policy arena, will honour his memory by actively embracing his beliefs and ideas\u00a0 geared towards uniting Nigeria beyond geo-political considerations.<\/p>\n
“The President has fond memories of meeting Prof. Obiozor on several occasions, and values his endearing sense of patriotism.<\/p>\n
“He joins the Igbo nation in mourning the irreparable loss of this great son of Nigeria, even as he prays for the peaceful repose of the soul of the deceased,” Adesina added.<\/p>\n
In a statement titled, “Imo State Government Obituary Announcement,\u201d Governor Hope Uzodinma had Wednesday night confirmed the death of Obiozor.<\/p>\n

\u201cA renowned academic, an exceptional diplomat and statesman and a tenacious patriot, Prof George Obiozor passed on recently after a brief illness.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe death of this foremost Igbo leader and former Nigeria\u2019s ambassador to the United States and the State of Israel, is a big loss to Imo State, the South East and the entire Nigeria. I have no doubt that both Nigeria and the international community will miss his profound intellectual contributions and wise counsel on national and global issues.<\/p>\n
