{"id":59690,"date":"2022-09-08T18:35:10","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T18:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=59690"},"modified":"2022-09-08T18:35:10","modified_gmt":"2022-09-08T18:35:10","slug":"59690","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=59690","title":{"rendered":"Queen Elizabeth II dies, Prince Charles is king"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Featured Photo: Late Queen Elizabeth II,\u00a0 New King Charles III<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Two days after presiding over the transfer of the reins of power from Boris Johnson to his successor, Prime Minister Liz Truss, the monarchical head of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II has passed on at the age of 96.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She is to be succeeded by her eldest son, the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">Elizabeth, the longest serving monarch for 70 years had four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Below is the BBC.com report of her death:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Queen<b> Elizabeth II, the UK&#8217;s longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">In a statement, His Majesty the King said: &#8220;The death of my beloved mother Her Majesty the Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">He said during the period of mourning and change he and his family would be &#8220;comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: &#8220;The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">&#8220;The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">All the Queen&#8217;s children travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Her grandson, Prince William, is also there, with his brother, Prince Harry, on his way.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was appointed by the Queen on Tuesday, said the monarch &#8220;provided us with the stability and strength that we needed&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">She said His Majesty would be known as King Charles III.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Queen Elizabeth II&#8217;s tenure as head of state spanned post-war austerity, the transition from empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War and the UK&#8217;s entry into &#8211; and withdrawal from &#8211; the European Union.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">Her reign spanned 15 prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and including Ms Truss, born 101 years later in 1975.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">She held weekly audiences with her prime minister throughout her reign.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">At Buckingham Palace in London, crowds awaiting updates on the Queen&#8217;s condition began crying as they heard of her death. The Union flag on top of the palace was lowered to half-mast at 18:30 BST.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Queen was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, in Mayfair, London, on 21 April 1926.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">Few could have foreseen she would become monarch but in December 1936 her uncle, Edward VIII, abdicated from the throne to marry the twice-divorced American, Wallis Simpson.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Elizabeth&#8217;s father became King George VI and, at age 10, Lilibet, as she was known in the family, became heir to the throne.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">Within three years, Britain was at war with Nazi Germany. Elizabeth and her younger sister, Princess Margaret, spent much of wartime at Windsor Castle after their parents rejected suggestions they be evacuated to Canada.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">After turning 18, Elizabeth spent five months with the Auxiliary Territorial Service and learned basic motor mechanic and driving skills. &#8220;I began to understand the esprit de corps that flourishes in the face of adversity,&#8221; she recalled later.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Through the war, she exchanged letters with her third cousin, Philip, Prince of Greece, who was serving in the Royal Navy. Their romance blossomed and the couple married at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947, with the prince taking the title of Duke of Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59692\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59692\" style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-59692\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/98828456_pa-33715649.jpg-1-249x300.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Duke of Edinburgh was at the Queen&#8217;s side for more than six decades of reign, becoming the longest-serving consort in British history in 2009<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">She would later describe him as &#8220;my strength and stay&#8221; through 74 years of marriage, before his death in 2021, aged 99.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Their first son, Charles, was born in 1948, followed by Princess Anne, in 1950, Prince Andrew, in 1960, and Prince Edward, in 1964. Between them, they gave their parents eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">Princess Elizabeth was in Kenya in 1952, representing the ailing King, when Philip broke the news that her father had died. She immediately returned to London as the new Queen.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It was all a very sudden kind of taking on and making the best job you can,&#8221; she later recalled.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">Elizabeth was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953, aged 27, in front of a then-record TV audience estimated at more than 20 million people.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Subsequent decades would see great change, with the end of the British Empire overseas and the swinging &#8217;60s sweeping away social norms at home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">Elizabeth reformed the monarchy for this less deferential age, engaging with the public through walkabouts, royal visits and attendance at public events. Her commitment to the Commonwealth was a constant &#8211; she visited every Commonwealth country at least once.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But there were periods of private and public pain.
