The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says it plans to publish the final list of candidates for Presidential, Senate and House of Representatives seats on Sept. 20 ahead of 2023 poll.<\/p>\n
Yakubu said activities for the 2023 General Elections would enter critical stages this month from the next 19 days onward.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe commission welcomes this initiative and as Co-Chairman of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), there is no doubt that the security agencies also welcome ideas and citizens\u2019 support towards peaceful elections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Director, CDD, Ms Idayat Hassan, said that the\u00a0meeting\u00a0being held against the background of security challenges plaguing the country.<\/p>\n
Hassan said the idea was to\u00a0start talking about how to deescalate the tension and\u00a0how to secure the environment, such that INEC would\u00a0be able to assess all parts of the country to conduct peaceful and legitimate election come 2023.<\/p>\n
\u201dI think one for this election,\u00a0 the security of election materials, the security of personnel, the security of voters are in context and there is actually problem in INEC\u00a0 assessing all areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe should note that this\u00a0is not\u00a0just an INEC\u00a0problem, this is a\u00a0stakeholder\u2019s problem, insecurity is already prevailing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe challenge we are having is how to do we\u00a0conduct\u00a0election against the background of this prevailing insecurity?\u00a0It will behold on the federal government and other stakeholders to come in.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Chris Pycroft, the Development Director,\u00a0Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), said that the office\u00a0was\u00a0delighted to be partnering with CDD and providing funding for\u00a0the event and\u00a0 related activity to promote peaceful and secure elections in 2023.<\/p>\n
According to Pycroft, this is a top priority for\u00a0the UK in Nigeria over the coming six\u00a0months, and one of multiple initiatives in\u00a0partnership with Nigerian and international stakeholders.<\/p>\n
\u201dThe stakes have never felt higher. Nigeria is facing more challenges than ever before in its democratic history to running a peaceful and secure election.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese elections are profoundly important not only for Nigeria but also for the African continent and democracy across the world,” he said.<\/p>\n
Pycroft said there was more at stake in terms of the\u00a0unity and peaceful co-existence of Nigeria\u2019s diverse religious, ethnic and cultural communities.<\/p>\n
Prof. Adebayo Olukoshi, Election Expert, CDD, said that Nigeria was challenged with several security challenges and there was need to seek ways to curb them before the election.<\/p>\n
Olukoshi\u00a0said\u00a0that\u00a0there was also the need to understand the various conflicts being faced with a view to developing a topology that would best\u00a0address them.<\/p>\n
