He explained that the salaries of the workers were ready adding that his administration has been faithful, and consistent in the payment of salaries for well over seven years.<\/p>\n
He said \u201cThe people will appreciate Ben Ayade when he leaves office\u201d,<\/p>\n
Just last month, the Bishop of Calabar, Anglican Communion, Prof. Nneoyi Egbe, lamented the numerous abandoned projects scattered across the state.<\/p>\n
He noted that while the hope of the people was raised when the governor started projects, especially the industrial projects, the hope had been dashed.<\/p>\n
His words : \u201cCross Riverians were hopeful for the long expected economic transformation of the state, when the government started these projects.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have now noticed that the administration has hung our hearts up in expectation.”<\/p>\n
He commended the state government for the improved security situation across the state, but appealed for improved road network.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur road network in the state is far from what we hoped for, many of the rural and urban roads have broken down.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis has contributed to the high cost of conveying farm produce from rural to urban centers.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever,\u00a0 we wish to commend the government on the slight improvement in the security within the state over the last year but\u00a0 the government should\u00a0 not to rest on its oars as it is not yet \u201cuhuru,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
His spokesman, Mr. Christian Ita, had then offered an explanation, saying that while some of the projects had been completed, others have attained various stages of completion.<\/p>\n
He advised anybody who was in doubt to undertake a tour of these projects rather than draw conclusion from the \u201ccomfort of their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government has not ended, it still has 10 to 11 months to run and work has not stopped in any of the projects initiated by this administration,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Last March, some persons claiming to be civil servants, Monday, protested before the office of the Head of Service (HOS) of Cross River State over alleged unpaid four years salaries by the state government.<\/p>\n
The protesters carried placards in Calabar with inscriptions such as \u201cover four years without salary,\u201d \u201cwho did we offend?\u201d \u201cWe go to work every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
Other placards carried by the protesters who sang solidarity songs bore the inscriptions: \u201cthe injustice is too much,\u201d \u201ca labourer deserves his wages.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Coordinator of the protest, David Iyaya, said the aggrieved \u201ccivil servants\u201d were from various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).<\/p>\n
Mr Iyaya claimed they were employed by the state in 2018, but had not received a dime since their employment.<\/p>\n
According to him, they were on a peaceful protest to the office of the HOS to let him and others know that they were suffering.<\/p>\n
He called for the sack of John Odey, the special adviser to Governor Ben Ayade on Payroll Matters, whom he blamed for \u201cnot fighting for the good of workers\u201d in the state.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are here to vent our anger. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed, but instead of sticking to it, the government is calling for new recruitment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want John Odey to be sacked. He is the SA on payroll and we expected him to mediate between us and the government as a former labour person, but the reverse is the case.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are so disappointed in him. We have lost four of our members; one just died last week at the teaching hospital,\u201d Mr Iyaya said.<\/p>\n
Reacting to the protest, the HOS, Ogbang Akwaji, said the protesters were not workers as they claimed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are not my workers but they say they have appointment letters even though I have not sighted them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is nothing new about these calibre of persons. They are flaunting appointment letters but the governor clearly stated that he did not give authorisation for their employment.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo if you have an appointment letter into the service and the governor said he did not authorise it then what you are holding amounts to nothing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe governor addressed them at the stadium and labour listed their matter as one of the items in the memorandum of understanding and we are on it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis protest is unnecessary but we will engage them at the appropriate time,\u201d the HOS said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
