{"id":58775,"date":"2022-07-09T01:07:48","date_gmt":"2022-07-09T01:07:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=58775"},"modified":"2022-07-09T01:07:48","modified_gmt":"2022-07-09T01:07:48","slug":"prison-break-nigeria-timeline-1993-inmates-in-edo-900-in-kuje-14-times-jailbreak-happened-under-buharis-watch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=58775","title":{"rendered":"Prison Break Nigeria: TIMELINE: 1,993 inmates in Edo, 900 in Kuje\u2026 14 times jailbreak happened under Buhari\u2019s watch"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_58716\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58716\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-58716\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/633BE0F4-2F5F-48B9-93FC-F14D1D987CFD.jpeg-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-58716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Buhari at Kuje Prison shortly after attack.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A gripping wave of horror and panic traversed the federal capital territory (FCT) on July 5 when unknown gunmen attacked the Kuje correctional facility for more than two hours without any obstruction from security agents.<\/p>\n<p>Residents of the FCT and, in fact, Nigerians at large woke up the next day with the shocking news that 64 Boko Haram members were part of the over 900 inmates that\u00a0broke out of the prison.<\/p>\n<p>It became more depressing when the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) claimed responsibility for the attack.<\/p>\n<p>On July 8, the federal government released the names and photos of the fleeing inmates.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Kuje incident is just the latest of the series of jailbreaks that have happened under President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s watch.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021,\u00a0TheCable reported\u00a0how thousands of inmates escaped from different prisons across the country in\u00a0four years of Buhari\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p>In this report, we examine the jailbreaks that have happened in the last 7 years of this administration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 7, 2017 \u2014 Enugu Maximum prison<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two inmates, Lucky Sama and Balogun Idiom Joseph\u00a0escaped\u00a0the Enugu maximum security prison through the ceiling of a catholic church located in the centre.<\/p>\n<p>According to Emeka Monday, the Enugu police spokesperson, the two inmates were convicted for two calendar years for stealing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 27, 2017 \u2013 Ikot Ekpene Prison in Akwa Ibom state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thirty-six prisoners\u00a0escaped\u00a0from the facility in a well-coordinated operation by the inmates.<\/p>\n<p>The inmates attacked the kitchen staff that were on duty and broke loose. The incident led to the death of four other inmates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>June\u00a03, 2018 \u2013 Minna medium security prison, Niger state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gunmen\u00a0attacked\u00a0Minna medium security prison, Niger state, killing an official and a commercial motorcyclist.<\/p>\n<p>The attack resulted in the escape of\u00a0210 inmates\u00a0from the facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 28, 2019 \u2013\u00a0Koton Karfe correctional centre, Kogi state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About 122 inmates\u00a0fled\u00a0the\u00a0Koton Karfe correctional centre\u00a0after a section of the facility was overrun by flood following a downpour in the town.<\/p>\n<p>However, the service said 25 of the fleeing inmates were recaptured.<\/p>\n<p>Lazarus Ogbee, lawmaker representing Ikwo\/Ezza south federal constituency in Ebonyi, described the incident as embarrassing and \u201cfirst of its kind in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 19, 2020 \u2014 Benin and Oko prisons, Edo state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About 1,993 inmates\u00a0escaped\u00a0from custody in the jailbreaks that happened in Benin and Oko, Edo state.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian Correctional Service said the inmates were convicted criminals serving terms for various criminal offences and awaiting execution or standing trial for violent crimes.<\/p>\n<p>This jail break occurred shortly after hoodlums attacked the prisons during the #EndSARS protest in the state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 22, 2020 \u2013 Okitipupa correctional centre, Ondo state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The train of violent attacks during the #EndSARS protests touched down in Okitipupa, Ondo state as hoodlums\u00a0broke into\u00a0the NCoS facility in the town.<\/p>\n<p>The hoodlums were said to have pulled down the fence of the facility and set prisoners free.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-eight inmates were released during the attack.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 5, 2021 \u2014 Owerri correctional centre, Imo state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) said 1,844 inmates escaped after gunmen attacked its facility in Owerri, Imo state.<\/p>\n<p>The correctional centre and the police command headquarters in Owerri were attacked consecutively.<\/p>\n<p>The police had\u00a0alleged\u00a0that the invasion was carried out by the Eastern Security Network, an outfit of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 8, 2021 \u2013\u00a0 Jos Custodial Centre, Plateau state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the wee hours of July 8, four suspects, who were awaiting trial over kidnapping and armed robbery,\u00a0escaped\u00a0the Jos custodial centre.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Aguda, the controller-in-charge of the command, blamed the incident on the negligence of the personnel on duty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 13, 2021 \u2013 Kabba Correctional Centre, Kogi state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two security operatives were killed in an\u00a0attack\u00a0by gunmen on Kabba Correctional Centre in Kogi state.<\/p>\n<p>The gunmen were said to have attacked a military checkpoint located a few metres away from the centre before helping 240 inmates escape incarceration.<\/p>\n<p>However, Sesan Nihi, Kogi correctional service spokesman,\u00a0said\u00a0114 of the escaped inmates were re-arrested.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 22, 2021 \u2014 Abolongo medium security custodial centre, Oyo state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Olarenwaju Anjorin, the spokesperson of the NCS, gunmen with sophisticated weapons\u00a0attacked\u00a0the Abolongo custodial centre in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The attackers, who reportedly caught the warders unawares, used hand grenades to gain access into the prison.<\/p>\n<p>The attack resulted in the escape of 837 inmates. A few days after the incident, Anjorin\u00a0said\u00a0262 inmates were recaptured, while 575 were at large.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 28, 2021 \u2013 Jos correctional centre, Plateau state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About 262 inmates escaped the correctional centre after gunmen\u00a0invaded\u00a0the facility.<\/p>\n<p>The NCoS\u00a0said\u00a010 of them were captured, nine killed, while 252 inmates were at large.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 2, 2022 \u2014 Mandala prison, Ilorin, Kwara state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Three inmates\u00a0escaped\u00a0from the custodial centre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 13, 2022 \u2014 Agbor prison, Delta state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After a heavy downpour on May 13 which resulted in the fall of the northern perimeter wall of the prison, three inmates took to their heels and\u00a0escaped the prison.<\/p>\n<p>Following the incident, correctional guards, army and police officials were deployed to bring back the inmates.<\/p>\n<p>The Kuje prison attack in the heart of the nation\u2019s capital and seat of power is the latest and seems to be the most daring of the attacks on the nations prisons.<\/p>\n<p>\u25aa\ufe0e Report by<strong> The Cable<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A gripping wave of horror and panic traversed the federal capital territory (FCT) on July 5 when unknown gunmen attacked the Kuje correctional facility for more than two hours without any obstruction from security agents.
