{"id":5232,"date":"2017-09-28T09:08:11","date_gmt":"2017-09-28T09:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=5232"},"modified":"2017-09-28T09:08:11","modified_gmt":"2017-09-28T09:08:11","slug":"justice-ayo-salami-heads-committee-on-looters-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=5232","title":{"rendered":"Justice Ayo Salami heads committee on looters trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Judicial Council (NJC) under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen has approved the \u00a0 establishment of the Corruption and Financial Crime Cases Trial Monitoring Committee (COTRIMCO) to be headed by retired president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Isa Salami.<br \/>\nAn NJC statement reads in part: The decision was taken on Wednesday at the 82nd meeting of the Council.<br \/>\nThe body which has 15 members will operate from the Council Secretariat.<br \/>\nThe other mbers include:-Justice Kashim Zannah, Chief Judge, Borno State; Justice P.O. Nnadi, Chief Judge, Imo State; Justice Marsahal Umukoro, Chief Judge Delta State;Justice M. L. Abimbola, Chief Judge, Oyo State; Mr. A.B Mahmoud, President, Nigerian Bar Association; Chief Wole Olanipekun, Former NBA President; Mr. Olisa Agbakoba SAN; Mr. J.B Daudu SAN; Mr. Augustine Alegeh SAN; Dr. Garba Tetengi SAN; Mrs. R.I Inga;\u00a0Secretary NJC, Gambo Saleh Secretary, NJC.<br \/>\nThe Committee&#8217;s primary functions include:<br \/>\n*Regular \u00a0 monitoring \u00a0 and \u00a0 evaluation \u00a0 of proceedings \u00a0 at designated \u00a0 courts \u00a0 for \u00a0 financial \u00a0 and \u00a0 economic \u00a0 crimes nationwide;<br \/>\n*Advising the Chief Justice of Nigeria on how to eliminate delay in the trial of alleged corruption cases;<br \/>\n*Giving feedback to the Council on progress of cases in the designated courts, conduct background checks on judges selected for the designated courts; and<br \/>\n*Evaluating the performance of the designated courts.<br \/>\nIt will be recalled that the Chief Justice of Nigeria in his speech at the Special Session of the Supreme Court of Nigeria to mark the commencement \u00a0 of \u00a0 the \u00a0 2017\/2018 \u00a0 Legal \u00a0 Year, \u00a0emphasized the concerns expressed by members of the public on the very slow speed with which corruption cases were being heard or determined by the courts.<br \/>\nConsequently, he directed all Heads of Courts to compile and forward \u00a0 to \u00a0 the \u00a0 Council, \u00a0 comprehensive \u00a0 lists \u00a0 of \u00a0 all \u00a0 corruption \u00a0 and\u00a0financial \u00a0 crime \u00a0 cases \u00a0 being \u00a0 handled \u00a0 by \u00a0 their \u00a0 various \u00a0 Courts.<br \/>\nHe also directed them to designate in their various jurisdictions one \u00a0 or \u00a0 more \u00a0 Courts, \u00a0 as \u00a0 Special \u00a0 Courts \u00a0 solely \u00a0 for \u00a0 the \u00a0 purpose \u00a0 of hearing \u00a0 and \u00a0 speedily \u00a0 determining \u00a0 corruption \u00a0 and \u00a0 financial \u00a0 crimes cases.<br \/>\nThe Supreme Court of Nigeria and the Court of Appeal were equally \u00a0 directed \u00a0to \u00a0fix special \u00a0 date \u00a0 in \u00a0each week for \u00a0hearing \u00a0 and determining \u00a0 appeals \u00a0 from \u00a0such \u00a0 cases.<br \/>\nThe Committee is expected to drive the Council&#8217;s new policy on anti-corruption war.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Judicial Council (NJC) under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen has approved the \u00a0 establishment of the Corruption and Financial Crime Cases Trial Monitoring Committee (COTRIMCO) to be headed by retired president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Isa Salami.
