Two people were arrested in connection with the incident, broadcasters BFM TV and RMC radio reported.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Emmanuel Macron slapped in the face by member of public\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lhni6Ytde0I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/20210608_145214.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33934\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/20210608_144619-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33935\"\/><figcaption>The handshake above; and then the swift slap that caught bodyguards unawares.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">French Prime Minister Jean Castex said the incident was an affront to democracy.<br \/><br \/>The incident took place while Macron was on a visit to the Drome region in south-eastern\u00a0France, where he met restaurateurs and students to talk about how life is returning to normal after the\u00a0COVID-19 epidemic.<br \/><br \/>In video circulating on social media, Macron, dressed in shirt sleeves, could be seen walking towards a crowd of well-wishers who were behind a metal barrier.<br \/><br \/>The French president reached out his hand to greet one man, in a green T-Shirt, with glasses and a face mask.<br \/><br \/>The man could be heard shouting out &#8220;Down with Macronia&#8221; (\u00e0\u00a0bas la Macronie) and then he delivered a slap to Macron\u2019s face.<br \/><br \/>Two of Macron\u2019s security detail tackled the man in the green T-shirt, while another ushered Macron away. But Macron remained in the vicinity of the crowd for a few more seconds, and appeared to be talking to someone on the other side of the barriers.<br \/><br \/>The presidential administration said there had been an attempt to strike Macron, but declined further comment.<br \/><br \/>The identify of the man who slapped Macron, and his motives, were unclear.
