{"id":33825,"date":"2021-06-03T11:36:36","date_gmt":"2021-06-03T10:36:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=33825"},"modified":"2021-06-03T11:36:36","modified_gmt":"2021-06-03T10:36:36","slug":"university-teachers-accused-of-sexual-harassment-sacked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=33825","title":{"rendered":"University teachers accused of sexual harassment sacked"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two University of Lagos (UNILAG) lecturers, who were accused of sexually harassing their students in a documentary by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), have been sacked.<br \/><br \/>The Governing Council of the institution announced their sack yesterday following the recommendation of probe panel raised by the varsity\u2019s Senate.<br \/><br \/>The lecturers \u2013 Dr. Boniface Igbeneghu and Dr. Samuel Omoniyi Oladipo \u2013 were exposed by the BBC documentary aired in 2019.<br \/><br \/>In the documentary, Igbeneghu of the European Languages and Integration Studies Department and Oladipo of the Economics Department, were exposed by undercover reporters posing as students.<br \/><br \/>The Council, chaired by Mr. Lanre Tejuoso, took the decision to sack the duo during its meeting on May 31, 2021, based on the recommendations of the Senate Committee that investigated the sexual harassment story of\u00a0BBC\u2019s Africa Eye\u00a0programme.<br \/><br \/>A statement released by the institution\u2019s information unit also added that the university\u2019s sexual harassment policy be reviewed to deter such activities on campus.<br \/><br \/>The statement reads: \u201cThe Governing Council of the University of Lagos, at its meeting on Monday, May 31, 2021, approved the immediate dismissal of Dr. Boniface Igbeneghu of the Department of European Languages and Integration Studies, Faculty of Arts and Dr. Samuel Omoniyi Oladipo of the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, from the services of the university.<br \/><br \/>\u201cCouncil, at its meeting, considered the Report and findings of the Senate Committee set up to investigate allegations of sexual harassment levelled against them in a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service Investigative Series titled AFRICA EYE (which centred on sexual harassment in tertiary institutions).<br \/><br \/>\u201cThe Council consequently decided and approved that both Dr. Boniface Igbeneghu and Dr. Samuel Omoniyi Oladipo be dismissed from the services of the University for misconduct, with effect from Monday, May 31, 2021 in line with section 18 of the University of Lagos Act 1967.<br \/><br \/>\u201cCouncil further directed that the Management should review the Sexual harassment Policy as may be neccesary and institute effective strategies to prevent future occurrence.\u201d<br \/><br \/>\u25aa\ufe0e Report by The Nation<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two University of Lagos (UNILAG) lecturers, who were accused of sexually harassing their students in a documentary by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), have been sacked.
