{"id":32866,"date":"2021-04-19T22:01:37","date_gmt":"2021-04-19T21:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=32866"},"modified":"2021-04-19T22:01:37","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T21:01:37","slug":"implementation-of-financial-autonomy-for-states-judiciary-begins-may-lawyers-join-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=32866","title":{"rendered":"Implementation of financial autonomy for states&#8217; judiciary begins May; lawyers join protest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, was urging Governors to accept the financial autonomy granted States&#8217; Judiciary; and lawyers staged a peaceful protest at the National Assembly on the same issue, the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has announced implementation of the policy begins in May.<br \/><br \/>Recall that the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has been on an industrial action and nationwide protests to compel governors to obey the 1999 constitution (as amended) and Executive Order 10 which granted autonomy to judiciary in the country. The members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) were in the National Assembly and elsewhere across the country to solidarity with JUSUN members who have kept the courts shut for weeks<br \/><br \/>Shortly after emerging from a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari&#8217;s Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, the chairman of the NGF, Dr Kayode Fayemi, maintained that the Governors forum was not opposed to financial autonomy for the judiciary.<br \/><br \/>According to him, after a meeting of the Solicitor-General of the Federation, the representatives of the judiciary, the representatives of the Conference of Speakers, and House of Representatives Monday, an agreement has been reached to begin implementation next month.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-everyday-ng wp-block-embed-everyday-ng\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/everyday.ng\/why-we-oppose-president-buharis-executive-order-10\/\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier, Senator Opeyemi told journalists: \u201cIt is laughable that at this point, we are still grappling with the need to grant independence to the judiciary arm of government at the state and local government levels.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThe National Assembly has been making laws that would guarantee full autonomy to the judiciary at the Federal level.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThe National Assembly does not make laws for the states; such power resides in the state Houses of Assembly.<br \/><br \/>\u201cJudiciary at the Federal Capital Territory is independent because we have done what we are supposed to do.<br \/><br \/>\u201cWhat is next is for the State Houses of Assembly to do what they are supposed to do.<br \/><br \/>\u201cAs a principle, as a policy, members of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, have tried not to call on those who are protesting to stop such protests.<br \/><br \/>\u201cWe do not want protests but definitely, we would rather talk more to State Governors, Houses of Assembly and other stakeholders to do the needful in the overriding public interest.<br \/><br \/>\u201cWe cannot continue to call on the judiciary to give peace a chance when we know the conditions under which they work cannot guarantee a passionate and enhanced delivery of justice.<br \/><br \/>\u201cWe are talking about judicial reforms; we are talking about the need for justice sector reforms.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThis is central and crucial to the independence of the judiciary in this country. We must not be left behind by the rest of the civilized world.<br \/><br \/>\u201cNobody stands to lose anything by granting independence to judiciary at the state level since it has been done at the national level.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThe fact that workers and staff of federal judiciary are joining the protest is only in solidarity with their colleagues at the state levels.<br \/><br \/>\u201cIt is a union matter and we do not have a control over it.
