{"id":31701,"date":"2021-03-02T19:43:27","date_gmt":"2021-03-02T18:43:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=31701"},"modified":"2021-03-02T19:43:27","modified_gmt":"2021-03-02T18:43:27","slug":"senate-president-to-service-chiefs-take-the-battle-to-bandits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=31701","title":{"rendered":"Senate President to Service Chiefs: Take the Battle to Bandits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Senate on Tuesday confirmed President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s nomination of Major General Lucky Eluoye Onyenucheya Irabor as Chief of Defence Staff with marching marching orders from Senate President Ahmad Lawan to him and Major General Ibrahim Attahiru (Chief of Army Staff), Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Agambi (Chief of Naval Staff); and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka O. Alao (Chief of air Staff) to take the battle to bandits and flush them out of the country.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>The confirmation of the nominees followed consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on Defence during plenary.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>The nominees were appointed by President Buhari to take-over the rein of leadership in the military from the former Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.<br \/><br \/>Chairman of the Committee, Aliyu Margatakarda Wammako (APC, Sokoto North), in his presentation of the report said that the Joint Committee on Defence, Army, Navy and Airforce \u201cscreened the four nominees and was satisfied with their qualifications, exposures, conducts, characters, experiences and General performances.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>According to Magatarkada, \u201cthe nominees have displayed wide and in-depth knowledge on strategies, tactics and military operations.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Contributing, Senator Jibrin Barau described the nominees as \u201ccapable\u201d in tackling head-on the challenges presented by the spate of insecurity across the country.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>The Senate President who bemoaned the poor security situation in the country, empasized that the confirmation of the service chiefs places squarely on them the responsibility of addressing the problems of banditry, kidnapping and insurgency.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>He said: \u201cLet me take this opportunity to thank the former Service Chiefs for doing their best, and also advice the Chief of Defence Staff and New Service Chiefs that Nigerians expect so much from them.<br \/><br \/>\u201cWe are in a very serious situation. The security situation must be improved, and the buck is now going to stop on their tables as far as operations are concerned.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Lawan while underscoring the importance of security in Nigeria, assured of the continued support of the National Assembly to the new leadership of the military.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>He described as \u201cunacceptable\u201d the recent activities of bandits which saw the kidnapping of students in Katsina, Niger, and Zamfara states, respectively.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>The Senate President said: \u201cWe in the National Assembly, particularly in the Senate, will continue to support our Armed Forces in whatever way is possible.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>\u201cWe believe that there is no better investment today in Nigeria, and, indeed at anytime, than investing in the security of our country, to protect the lives and properties of our people.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>\u201cAnd, therefore, we will continue to support them, but we expect excellence. We expect them \u2013 our armed forces \u2013 to take the fight to the bandits.<br \/><br \/>\u201cIn a situation where bandits will come to a school, take over 300 hundred students on motorcycles and disappear into thin air without any trace is not acceptable.<br \/><br \/>\u201cSomething has to give, because apparently this is becoming an industry.
