{"id":31139,"date":"2021-02-07T16:30:27","date_gmt":"2021-02-07T15:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=31139"},"modified":"2021-02-07T16:30:27","modified_gmt":"2021-02-07T15:30:27","slug":"video-endorsed-by-nigerian-professors-ivermectin-gets-applause-to-treat-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=31139","title":{"rendered":"VIDEO: Endorsed by Nigerian professors, Ivermectin gets applause to treat Covid-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less than three weeks after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo welcomed the report of a Nigerian Covid-19 research group on the likely prevention and treatment of Ivermectin, the drug is is receiving more endorsemens.<br \/><br \/>This time, in an interview Australian doctor and prominent gastroenterologist, Prof. Thomas Borody, openly wondered why the government of his own country was not using the drug.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/VID-20210207-WA0019.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recall that after the visit of the Nigerian researchers, the World Health organisation (WHO) and the American Food and Drugs agency issued statements questioning the efficacy of the readily available drug for treating Covid-19.<br \/><br \/>Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, welcomed the efforts by a team of Nigerian professors and scientists investigating the effectiveness of, and roles that\u00a0Ivermectin\u00a0drug can play in the treatment of the Coronavirus disease.<br \/><br \/>The team, composed of Nigerian scholars at home and abroad, has also submitted their report on the usefulness of the drug to the World Health Organisation which has already appointed a Peer Review expert from the United Kingdom.<br \/><br \/>Speaking mid January while being briefed on the report by a team of scientists led by Prof. Femi Babalola, the Principal investigator, and Prof. Chris Bode, the Chief Medical Director of LUTH, the Vice President expressed excitement that Nigeria and Nigerians &#8220;are at the cutting edge of scientific research into the COVID-19 treatment.&#8221;<br \/><br \/>According to him, &#8220;we have an opportunity here and I am so fascinated to hear this drug has been used in the treatment of River Blindness in this country.&#8221;<br \/><br \/>While commending the efforts of the team, Prof. Osinbajo added that with the report, Nigeria is at an advantage both in knowledge and availability of the drug, especially since\u00a0Ivermectin\u00a0has been found useful not only in the treatment of COVID-19, but also as a prophylactic medication.<br \/><br \/>He disclosed that the Federal Government will explore further ways to support the research for the benefit of Nigerians and humanity generally, while also advancing the effective funding of scientific research in the country.<br \/><br \/>Members of the group named IVERCOVID Research Group are the Principal Investigator, Prof. Femi Babalola, an Ophthalmologist and surgeon; the Chief Medical Director of LUTH, Prof. Chris Bode; the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Council at LUTH, Prof. Lanre Adeyemo; a US-based Clinical Pharmacologist, Prof. Adesuyi Ajayi; two project virologists: Prof. S.A Omilabu and Dr. Olumuyiwa Salu; and also the Project Coordinator, Dr. Felix Alakaloko.<br \/><br \/>Both Prof. Babalola and the CMD, LUTH commended the Buhari Presidency for encouraging the research and thanked the Vice President for his personal role and support.<br \/><br \/>The report is titled, \u201cA randomised controlled trial for the repurposing of\u00a0Ivermectin\u00a0in the management of COVID-19,&#8221; and highlights are discussed below:<br \/><br \/>The research, carried out in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) was undertaken following the report of a 5,000-fold reduction in viral load by Australian workers with in-vitro use of\u00a0Ivermectin\u00a0on COVID-19 in culture.<br \/><br \/>The PI has worked extensively with Ivermectin on the Onchocerciasis-River Blindness control programme, through which many Nigerians have used Ivermectin.<br \/><br \/>FINDINGS<br \/><br \/>The study revealed that the mechanism of action of Ivermectin, include \u201cInhibiting viral entry into cells nucleus; and \u201cDirect suppression of viral RNA load of SARS CoV 2,\u201d among others.<br \/><br \/>Ivermectin is orally absorbed with higher absorption as a solution better than tablets, and &#8220;The Mean Residence Time&#8221; (MRT) is 3.4 days. This informs the suggested frequency of dosing, i.e. twice a week.<br \/><br \/>\u00a0The research\u2019s Null hypothesis noted that: \u201cSafe doses of Ivermectin are not useful in the treatment of patients with virology proven COVD-19 disease, does not lower viral load, and does not shorten time to negativity, neither does it cause improvement in clinical parameters when compared to Lopinavir\/Ritonavir\/Placebo.\u201d<br \/><br \/>But its Alternative Hypothesis revealed that, \u201cSafe doses of Ivermectin are useful in the treatment of patients with virology proven COVID-19 disease, lowering viral load, shortening time to negativity, and causing improvement in clinical parameters when compared with Lopinavir\/Ritonavir\/Placebo.\u201d<br \/><br \/>RESULTS<br \/><br \/>In its results so far, the Study noted that the randomisation was effective based on distribution of age, sex and some clinical presentation at baseline such as cough and fever.<br \/><br \/>The overall results\u00a0showed that the \u201cDays-To-Negative (DTN) reduced by 3.8 days overall. While a few patients are negative by day two, 50 per cent are negative by day 5.\u201d<br \/><br \/>The study indicated that Clinical trials of Ivermectin have been carried out in at least 21 countries worldwide, including Nigeria. It referenced the \u201cMeta-analysis of clinical trials of Ivermectin to treat COVID-19 infection\u201d by Dr. Andrew Hill, Department of Pharmacology, University of Liverpool, UK.<br \/><br \/>Highlighting the practical applications, the Study proposed that \u201cIvermectin should be considered for adoption into the uniform treatment guidelines of COVID- 19 in Nigeria,\u201d noting the \u201cpotential use of ivermectin as prophylaxis Pending the rollout of vaccination programs or alongside it.\u201d<br \/><br \/>However, the Study emphasized that Ivermectin \u201cis not meant to replace other COVID-19 measures such as social distancing, face masking and hygiene, or vaccinations,\u201d adding that, \u201cIt is possibly an additional tool which can be deployed to fight the pandemic.\u201d<br \/><br \/>The group stated that it has forwarded a report of its findings to NAFDAC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Less than three weeks after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo welcomed the report of a Nigerian Covid-19 research group on the likely prevention and treatment of Ivermectin, the drug is is receiving more endorsemens.
