{"id":2909,"date":"2017-06-07T10:08:27","date_gmt":"2017-06-07T10:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=2909"},"modified":"2017-06-07T10:08:27","modified_gmt":"2017-06-07T10:08:27","slug":"switzerland-scandal-how-ex-agf-adoke-directed-efcc-to-probe-alleged-20m-bribery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=2909","title":{"rendered":"Switzerland scandal: \u00a0How ex-AGF, Adoke, directed EFCC to probe alleged $20m bribery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;Alleged $20m bribery: What ex-AGF told Switzerland<br \/>\nFresh facts emerged yesterday that a former Attorney-General of the Federation\u00a0and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello ( SAN) \u00a0actually directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) to probe the alleged $20million bribery scandal uncovered in Switzerland.<br \/>\nBut it was the anti-graft commission which said the affected funds might have been consultancy fees.<br \/>\nThe Swiss authorities, through the Office of The Attorney-General, Department of International Affairs on May 2, 2012 had implicated some Nigerians in the $20million scandal alongside Dredging International Services (Cyprus) Ltd.<br \/>\nFindings however confirmed that the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan referred the allegations to the EFCC.<br \/>\nIt also sent the outcome of the EFCC investigation to Felix Reinmann, the Swiss Federal Attorney.<br \/>\nA letter by a former Attorney- General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke( SAN) revealed the steps taken by the Federal Government.<br \/>\nThe letter said: &#8220;I refer to your letter dated 2nd May 2012, wherein you forwarded a Mutual Legal Assistance request to Nigeria on the above subject matter. The request was brought pursuant to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption and the International Law Principle of Reciprocity.<br \/>\n&#8220;The documents on further findings of the executing competent authority the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission revealed that the money were paid as consultancy fee to the various recipients.<br \/>\n&#8220;The said documents are herein forwarded to you verbatim.<br \/>\n&#8220;Accept please, the assurances of my highest consideration and esteemed regards.<br \/>\nAccording to Premium Times Newspaper, Dredging International Services (Cyprus) Ltd \u00a0was sentenced to a fine of one million Swiss Francs and asked to refund 36 million Swiss Francs illegal profit.<br \/>\nThe fines were imposed after the company was indicted for allegedly making illicit payments to a former Managing Director of the NPA; a former Managing Director of NPA\u2019s Eastern Ports, ; a former Executive Director of Finance at the NPA; and a former executive assistant to a Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.<br \/>\nInvestigators believe that the executive assistant acted on behalf of Jonathan&#8217;s aide<br \/>\nThe trio from NPA collectively received $2.6million in kickbacks, the executive assistant was said to have been paid $157,000 for unknown reasons.<br \/>\nAnother $18million dollar was passed to companies in which some yet unknown Nigerian officials have interests.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;Alleged $20m bribery: What ex-AGF told Switzerland Fresh facts emerged yesterday that a former Attorney-General of the Federation\u00a0and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello ( SAN) \u00a0actually directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) to probe the alleged $20million bribery scandal uncovered in Switzerland.
