{"id":25935,"date":"2020-04-17T09:56:43","date_gmt":"2020-04-17T08:56:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=25935"},"modified":"2020-04-17T09:56:43","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T08:56:43","slug":"abuja-mobile-courts-convicts-over-lockdown-offences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=25935","title":{"rendered":"Abuja mobile courts convicts over lockdown offences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The five mobile courts reactivated to try violators of the lockdown order in the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday convicted no fewer than 20 violators.<br \/>\nMr Ikharo Attah, Chairman, FCT Movement Restrictions Enforcement Team, announced this in Abuja while giving an update on the level of compliance with the regulations put in place to control the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.<br \/>\nAttah explained that the convicts were fined between N1,000 and N5,000, adding that those with vehicles would only get them back after the lockdown had been lifted, with the likelihood of paying for demurrage.<br \/>\nHe disclosed that the enforcement team would begin a clampdown on residents who usually engage in early morning fitness exercises, especially jogging around town.<br \/>\nAttah also revealed that a fake Policeman was arrested in the Mpape area of the territory, adding that more mobile courts would be established soon.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have at least five Mobile Courts and we are hoping to open more with the assistance of the Legal Unit of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services.<br \/>\n\u201cAs at 1 p.m., we already secured 20 convictions, while two pleaded not guilty.<br \/>\n\u201cWe also arrested a man who is not a Policeman, but was wearing a Police cap. He is currently being detained at the Police Station in Mpape.<br \/>\n\u201cWe were at the Kubwa-Mpape road as early as 4 a.m.; we are going to tighten our grip on these areas because when we locked down Mpape to traffic, we discovered that residents were sneaking out massively on foot to access Maitama.<br \/>\n\u201cWhile we are continuing with our general enforcement, we are going to start arresting people found jogging, as from Friday.<br \/>\n\u201cWe now have thousands of people coming out in some areas to jog, very early in the morning. We are going to arrest them,\u201d he stated.<br \/>\nThe News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the FCT administration recently reactivated mobile courts to prosecute violators of the Presidential directive on the cessation of movement across the territory.<br \/>\nThe FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, has explained that the measure was part of the resolution reached at the end of FCT COVID-19 Security Committee meeting.<br \/>\nBello said that residents were using the excuse of going to the markets to flout the lockdown directives, while traders selling non-essential food commodities were using the window period to open their shops in clear violation of the lockdown directive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The five mobile courts reactivated to try violators of the lockdown order in the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday convicted no fewer than 20 violators.
