Governor Seyi Makinde has tested positive to COVID-19, joining Governors Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and Nasir el Rufai of Kaduna as State Chief executive officers who are in self isolation as a result of the pandemic that has topped 772,025 infections worldwide.
\nA new death has been announced by Health Minister, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, bringing Nigeria’s number to two. There have been 37,019 deaths and 160,243 recoveries workdwide as at Monday night.
\nSo far, there are 131 cases of infection in Nigeria, according to the NigeriaCentre for Disease Control (NCDC) as at Monday night. Five infected persons were discharged in Lagos, bringing the number of those discharged to eight.
\nHowever, contact tracing is on for 6,000 persons who may have associated physically with the previously infected 111 cases before the additional 20 were added on Monday night.
\nAbuja and Lagos are to go on lockdown by 11.00 p.m. as announced by President Muhammadu Buhari. The third State, Ogun, joins on Friday, April 3, according to Governor Dapo Abiodun, who says the State Government wants to make adequate preparations. Abiodun said on Monday, at the opening of an Isolation Centre in Ikenne, that it has made overtures to the Federal Government for the breather.
\nMakinde on Monday confirmed he tested positive to the rampaging coronavirus.
\nThe governor who tweeted via his personal handle @seyiamakinde on Monday, said that he remains asymptomatic and would remain in isolation.
\nHe also said that he had appointed Prof\u00a0Temitope Alonge, a former Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, as the Head of COVID-19 Task Force while he recovers.
\nIt would be recalled that Governor Makinde was one of the governors who attended the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, penultimate week, where he met with a number of colleagues.
\nThe Nigerian Governor\u2019s Forum (NGF) had after the meeting advised its members who attended the Abuja meeting to go into self- isolation or undergo COVID-19 tests.
\nThe test result, which was delivered to the governor at about 5.30pm indicated that he had tested positive to coronavirus.
\nThe news of Makinde\u2019s positive test came on the heels of the release of the State\u2019s index case from the COVID-19 isolation centre.
\nThe release of the patient was consequent upon the completion of his treatment at the Agbami Chest Hospital isolation centre, Ibadan.
\nThe American returnee had initially tested negative only for the second test to read positive.
\nThe index case had been on self-isolation at a private residence in Ibadan until he was transferred to the Isolation centre at Agbami, Jericho area of Ibadan on March 23.
\nThe index case was released after two consecutive negative tests, the statement read.
\nThe statement also quoted the State\u2019s Incident Manager, Dr. Taiwo Ladipo as saying that the confirmed case spent six days in the isolation centre and had two negative tests.
\n\u201cHe is well and very stable and is now back to his house. The infectious disease specialist will be reviewing him for follow up action,\u201d the Manager said.
\nThe governor stated in his tweet: \u201cI just received my COVID-19 confirmation test result. It is positive. I am asymptomatic and will continue to self-isolate.
\n\u201cI have designated Prof Temitope Alonge, former Chief Medical Director of the University College, Ibadan, as the Head of COVID-19 Task Force while I recover fully. Please continue to comply with all the directives from the COVID-19 Task Force. Stay home, stay safe.
