{"id":24682,"date":"2020-02-20T10:07:17","date_gmt":"2020-02-20T09:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=24682"},"modified":"2020-02-20T10:07:17","modified_gmt":"2020-02-20T09:07:17","slug":"lassa-fever-lagos-government-places-63-people-under-surveillance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=24682","title":{"rendered":"Lassa Fever: Lagos Government Places 63 People Under Surveillance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Lagos State Government says it has placed the 63 people who had direct contact with index Lassa fever case under surveillance.<br \/>\nThe State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, made this known while giving an update on the Lassa fever case recorded in the state at a media briefing in Lagos on Wednesday.<br \/>\nThe News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the state government had early this morning confirmed a case of Lassa fever outbreak in the state.<br \/>\nIt said that the Ministry of Health, through its Epidemiology, Biosecurity and Global Health Directorate, was conducting a \u2018contact tracing\u2019 to determine those who might have been infected in line with the international standards.<br \/>\nAbayomi said that the confirmed index case being isolated at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, had contact with 63 people since his arrival in Lagos from Ebonyi.<br \/>\nAccording to him, he had contact with people at the Lagos Law School, the Nigerian Air Force Clinic and LUTH.<br \/>\n\u201cThey are all being monitored.<br \/>\n\u201cIf they develop any symptom of Lassa fever, we will pick them up early and isolate them so that we can break the circle of transmission,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThe commissioner, explaining how the index case was identified, said that the man who came from Ebonyi for a programme at the Law School, had been unwell.<br \/>\nAccording to him, he was treated at the Law School Clinic for malaria, but he did not recover.<br \/>\n\u201cHe was then referred to the Nigeria Air Force Clinic, Onikan, where he was further managed and was referred to LUTH when there was no improvement,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nAbayomi said he was suspected to have Lassa fever based on his point of origin and his non-response to standard treatment for malaria and typhoid.<br \/>\n\u201cThe test was confirmed as positive on Feb. 17, and he was immediately transferred to the Isolation Containment Facility in LUTH,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nAbayomi noted that Lassa fever had spread to 26 states, with 472 cases and 72 deaths recorded thus far.<br \/>\nHe assured Lagos residents that there was no cause for alarm.<br \/>\nAbayomi expressed optimism that the state\u2019s proactive approach would halt the spread from person to person.<br \/>\nBy NAN<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lagos State Government says it has placed the 63 people who had direct contact with index Lassa fever case under surveillance.
