The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,\u00a0EFCC,\u00a0Ilorin Zonal\u00a0Office\u00a0has arrested a\u00a038-year-old\u00a0man, Festus Akinyemi Abiona who was indicted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations, FBI\u00a0over his alleged involvement in internet fraud.
\nAbiona had been on the wanted list of the Commission for more than eight months over the alleged fraud case,\u00a0before luck ran\u00a0out on\u00a0him and\u00a0he\u00a0was finally arrested in his hideout.
\nOperatives of the EFCC smoked him out of his hiding on February 6, 2020 from his\u00a0beautifully built duplex in Arepo,\u00a0Ogun State. He had gone into hiding and deliberately refused to step out of his house, when he got wind of the fact that the EFCC was investigating him. For the past five months, he was in hiding for fear of being arrested.
\nThe commission in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Tony Orilade, the FBI petition dated 10th of July 2019, alleged that Abiona was involved in Business Email Compromise, BEC, and other internet-related fraud.
\nThe petition stated further: \u201cIn\u00a0May 2016, the FBI received information that an actor or actors bypassed online security to steal money from retirement accounts held by an insurance company for Public Workers in the United States,\u00a0\u00a0which resulted in the loss of approximately $2,500, 000.
\n\u201cThe accounts contained numerous communications between Abiona and other criminal co-conspirators seeking to commit business email compromise (BEC), Tax Refund Fraud,\u00a0\u00a0and other Computer enabled fraud\u201d.
\nInvestigation into the case by the Commission revealed that\u00a0a syndicate that involved\u00a0Abiona\u00a0perpetrated the fraud.\u00a0Millions of naira\u00a0were\u00a0traced to his bank accounts and some of the emails used in perpetrating the fruad have been taken over from the suspect.
\nThe suspect on sighting operatives of the EFCC flushed all his SIM cards into the toilet and destroyed all his Automated Teller Machines, ATM cards in order to destroy evidence.
\nHe has also refused to give a statement since his arrest, but he will soon be arraigned in Court.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
