{"id":23681,"date":"2020-01-08T10:11:51","date_gmt":"2020-01-08T09:11:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=23681"},"modified":"2020-01-08T10:11:51","modified_gmt":"2020-01-08T09:11:51","slug":"senegals-mane-is-african-footballer-pf-the-year-nigerias-oshoala-picks-female-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=23681","title":{"rendered":"Senegal&#8217;s Man\u00e9 is African Footballer pf the year, Nigeria&#8217;s Oshoala picks female award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Liverpool\u2019s Sadio Man\u00e9 has been named African Footballer of the Year for the first time after beating his teammate Mohamed Salah and Manchester City\u2019s Riyad Mahrez, while Barcelona and Nigeria\u2019s Asisat Oshoala was named as women\u2019s player of the year.<br \/>\nThe Senegal forward received his award from the four-time winner Samuel Eto\u2019o at a star-studded ceremony in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada in Egypt, which was also attended by the former Arsenal manager Ars\u00e8ne Wenger, although Salah was not in attendance. Having finished as runner-up to the Egypt forward for the last two years, Man\u00e9 becomes the second Senegalese to win the award after another Liverpool player, El Hadji-Diouf, in 2001 and 2002.<br \/>\n&#8220;To be honest I would prefer to be playing football than speaking in front of so many people,\u201d said Man\u00e9. \u201cI\u2019m really happy and really proud at the same time. I would like to thank my family, especially my uncle who is here today. It is a big day for me and I would love to thank all the Senegalese people who have been voting for me. I\u2019m from a very small village called Bambali and I\u2019m sure they are all watching me tonight.\u201d<br \/>\nOshoala, who scored in Barcelona\u2019s Champions League final\u00a0defeat to Lyon, was also delighted to be recognised.<br \/>\n\u201cGrateful to be African Women\u2019s Player of the year for the 4th time,\u201d she wrote on Twitter. \u201cThank God, my Family, Friends and Fans for the support. Big shoutout to my club , my management , team mates at both national team and club level and of course thanks to @CAF_Online for the opportunity.\u201d<br \/>\nAlgeria were named as men\u2019s team of the year, with Djamel Belmadi picking up the coaching award. Cameroon, who were beaten by England at the Women\u2019s World Cup last summer, were named women\u2019s team of the year.<br \/>\nAs well as helping Liverpool to victory in the Champions League final in June, Man\u00e9 shared the Premier League Golden Boot with Salah and Arsenal\u2019s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after a momentous season for African players in English football. The 27-year-old has continued his good form into this season having already scored 11 league goals in Liverpool\u2019s brilliant start to the campaign that sees them lead the table by 13 points from Leicester.
