{"id":23038,"date":"2019-12-12T16:15:10","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T15:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=23038"},"modified":"2019-12-12T16:15:10","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T15:15:10","slug":"we-have-the-number-to-emend-the-constitution-to-suit-our-own-position-as-muslims-says-cjn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=23038","title":{"rendered":"We have the number to amend the constitution to suit our own position as Muslims, says CJN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, yesterday advocated for the amendment of Nigeria\u2019s constitution to accommodate some of the concerns of Muslims and the Shari\u2019a law.<br \/>\nMuhammad made this known while declaring the 20th Annual Judges Conference open at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria Faculty of Law\u2019s Moot Court.<br \/>\nCommenting on the theme of the two-day conference, \u2018Documentation of Contracts in Islamic Law: Procedure, Sample Precedents and Practice\u2019, organised by the Centre for Islamic Legal Studies (CILS) of the ABU in collaboration with National Judicial Institute (NJI), Abuja, Justice Muhammad also urged academicians to champion the cause of redesigning the methods of teaching Shari\u2019a law.<br \/>\nRepresented by Justice Muhammad Danjuma, Grand Khadi of Niger State, the CJN said the implementation of his suggestions would be more feasible if universities give the Shari\u2019a law its own faculty.<br \/>\nHe said: \u201cAs we all know, there are sections of the constitution that allow the implementation of Shari\u2019a personal law and apart from that, we cannot do more.<br \/>\nHowever, we have the number to emend the constitution to suit our own position as Muslims.\u201d<br \/>\nMuhammad said increase of judges to be learned in Shari\u2019a would allow them to attend to issues that have to do with Islamic law.<br \/>\nIn the same vein, the CJN said in view of the importance of the Shari\u2019a legal system to the legal profession, Shari\u2019a law ought to be taught in Arabic language in Nigerian universities.<br \/>\nHe added: \u201cThe Shari\u2019a law should be taught in Arabic not English. There is no university in Nigeria that runs Shari\u2019a in Arabic; they all teach Shari\u2019a in English.
