{"id":22406,"date":"2019-11-08T21:03:48","date_gmt":"2019-11-08T20:03:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=22406"},"modified":"2019-11-08T21:03:48","modified_gmt":"2019-11-08T20:03:48","slug":"social-media-regulation-most-people-in-power-dont-know-sacrifice-made-for-democracy-says-kukah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=22406","title":{"rendered":"Social Media Regulation: Most people in power don\u2019t know sacrifice made for democracy, says Kukah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Bishop Matthew Kukah, has cautioned the Federal Government against planned regulation of social media, saying it could hinder freedom of speech.<br \/>\nHe also noted that most people currently in the corridors of power don\u2019t know the sacrifice that Nigerians made for democracy.<br \/>\nKukah disclosed this on Friday while speaking at the convocation lecture of Achievers University, Owo in Ondo State.<br \/>\nThe lecture was titled: \u201cSome reasons why Nigeria has failed to achieve greatness\u201d.<br \/>\nThe bishop, who said freedom to speak must be done responsibly, asked government to be careful on the planned regulation of the social media.<br \/>\nHe added that the social media was an avenue for Nigerians to bare their minds and feelings about happenings in the country.<br \/>\nAccording to him, most of the people in the corridor of power today are not aware of the sacrifice made for the country\u2019s democracy.<br \/>\nKukah said he was ready to defend freedom of speech in Nigeria with the last drop of his blood.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m worried that many in power don\u2019t know the sacrifice we made, the freedom we fought for,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nHe noted that a nation thrives on free flow of ideas and information among its citizenry.<br \/>\nHe lamented that ethnicity and religion had become liabilities in Nigerian context.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are over 90 per cent Christians and Muslims in Nigeria, but there is nowhere in the world where religion has become an incubus, a burden and source of dreadful violence as it has in Nigeria.<br \/>\n\u201cOur leaders are kneeling before pastors and imams seeking blessings, while the rest of the world is moving on, drawing inspiration from sweat, brains and brawn even without evoking God.<br \/>\n\u201cWe evoke God to witness to our corruption and outright larceny,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nKukah warned that the country was performing below expectations, saying that everybody could attest to this.<br \/>\nHe explained that what held Nigeria together were resources which he said were being used irresponsibly by those who run the country.<br \/>\n\u201cThe main challenge is not of the boundaries of geography but the spread of ideas and knowledge and, of course, memory is a source of knowledge.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are angry, but we are not the first group to be angry,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nHe urged Nigerian leaders to invoke common emotions that could hold the citizens together as one.<br \/>\nKukah encouraged the graduands of the university \u201cnot to be locked in the abyss of ethnicity and religion,\u201d but to liberate themselves, urging them not to cut corners because the road to success was long and hard.<br \/>\nCommenting, Dr. Bode Ayorinde, the founder and pro-chancellor of the university, thanked Kukah for the lecture and described him as a national hero who should be celebrated.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0News Agency of Nigeria\u00a0reports that the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr. Lai Mohammed has recently announced government\u2019s plans to regulate the social media to combat falsehood.<br \/>\nReport by <strong>NAN<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--\/data\/user\/0\/com.samsung.android.app.notes\/files\/share\/clipdata_191108_205627_485.sdoc--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Bishop Matthew Kukah, has cautioned the Federal Government against planned regulation of social media, saying it could hinder freedom of speech.
