Ahead\nof Tuesday’s general elections in Mozambique former President Dr Goodluck\nJonathan has charged the southern African nation’s electoral commission to strive to set higher standards and be a shining example for\nother nations on the continent. <\/p>\n\n\n
Jonathan\nwho is the Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) in Mozambique stated this at a meeting with the president of the National\nElectoral Commission (CNE) Mr. Abdul Carimo and his commissioners in Maputo.<\/p>\n\n\n
He\nadvised Carimo to seek to build his legacy around transparent\nand credible election processes, adding that the conduct of free\nand fair elections in\nMozambique would go a long way towards strengthening democracy in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n
He\nsaid further:\n“As you get ready for the October 15, elections the rest\nof the continent will be looking up to you, expecting a successful process that\nwill take African democracy a notch higher and leave pleasant lessons for other\nnations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
He\nadded that Africa needs functional democracies and strong institutions that would bring about good\ngovernance and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n
In his welcome remarks, Carimo told the AU team that\nthe Commission had made all necessary preparations for the conduct of a\ncredible elections. <\/p>\n\n\n
He however stated that there would be no\nelections at ten polling stations in the districts of Macomia, Moc\u00edmboa da Praia and\nMedumbe, Cabo Delgado, because of the violent activities of insurgents in the region.\n<\/p>\n\n\n
Jonathan who arrived in Maputo last Saturday had already\nmet with the leadership of the ruling party FRELIMO, the main opposition party\nRENAMO, heads of other observer missions as well as some leaders of the civil\nsociety in the country. <\/p>\n\n\n
Upon his arrival, the former President held a meeting\nwith the AU short-term observers where he emphasized the importance of the\nelections in Mozambique for the ongoing peace process.
