{"id":20431,"date":"2019-09-05T16:57:07","date_gmt":"2019-09-05T16:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=20431"},"modified":"2019-09-05T16:57:07","modified_gmt":"2019-09-05T16:57:07","slug":"jonathan-at-sao-tome-peace-summit-urges-african-leaders-to-protect-rights-and-businesses-of-fellow-africans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=20431","title":{"rendered":"Jonathan at Sao Tome Peace Summit, urges African leaders to protect rights and businesses of fellow Africans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against\nthe backdrop of recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, former President Dr.\nGoodluck Jonathan has urged African leaders to strive to protect the rights and\nbusinesses of fellow Africans within their domain. <\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nformer President made this call in a key note address he presented Thursday at\nthe ongoing International Peace Summit in Sao Tome and Principe, adding that\nsustainable development is only possible in an atmosphere of peace and\nsecurity. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emphasising\nthe need for leaders to protect lives and property on the Continent, Jonathan further\nsaid: \u201cTo make meaningful progress, Africans must be encouraged to treat one\nanother as brothers and sisters, in love and unity. Relations within and\nbetween nations should never be allowed to degenerate to a level where citizens\nwill resort to self-help by visiting violence on fellow Africans and their legitimate\nbusiness interests. <\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGrowth\nand development can only be cultivated and sustained when leaders ensure that\nthe rights and freedoms of citizens as well as migrants are respected and\nprotected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nconference has in attendance many serving and former African leaders including Sao\nTome President Evaristo Carvalho, Prime Minister Jorge Bom Jesus, former\nPresident of Niger Mahamane Ousmane and former President of Guinea Bissau\nManuel Serifo Nhamadjo. <\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nFormer President who is the Chairman of the the African wing of the newly inaugurated &nbsp;International Summit Council for Peace (ISCP),\nalso noted that\ngood governance, where peace and security reign, is the way to a peaceful and prosperous\ncontinent. <\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\nsaid: \u201cFor peace to thrive, we must first build hope in the lives of the people\nbecause hope inspires love, love promotes peace, peace engenders &nbsp;&nbsp;justice while justice guarantees freedom and\ntrust. These universal virtues are central to our quest for a peaceful and\nprosperous continent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking\non the theme of the conference, Jonathan said: \u201cI believe that its theme, \u2018Building\na Peaceful and Prosperous Africa Centered on Universal Values: Interdependence,\nmutual prosperity and Universal Values\u2019, speaks directly to the need for a concerted\neffort towards healing a troubled world.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI will continue to state that the dream of the ISCP\nis consistent with my personal ideals and that of my Foundation. The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) is\ncommitted to the principles that strengthen democracy, good governance, peace\nand stability while promoting prosperity through youth empowerment in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBuilding\npeace is a task for every one of us, irrespective of the position one occupies;\nwhether as a leader or a follower, peace is an ideal which we must deliberately\nwork for. Peace is not rain from heaven, it is a seed we plant and nurture for\nit to grow and bear fruits in our families, countries and the world at large. <\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeace, justice and democracy are some of the greatest ideas of our world. It is the tripod upon which sustainable development stands.
