{"id":20407,"date":"2019-09-05T12:45:25","date_gmt":"2019-09-05T12:45:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=20407"},"modified":"2019-09-05T12:45:25","modified_gmt":"2019-09-05T12:45:25","slug":"can-president-urges-tiv-and-jukun-to-embrace-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=20407","title":{"rendered":"CAN President urges Tiv and Jukun to embrace peace"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The President, Christian Association\u00a0of Nigeria\u00a0(CAN), Rev Dr\u00a0Samson\u00a0Ayokunle, has appealed to the leadership of both Jukun and Tiv peoples in Taraba and Benue States to sheathe their swords and embrace peace, adding that no society can develop without peace, tolerance and harmony.<br \/><br \/> On-going hostilities between the two tribal groups, living side by side and inter-marrying, have led to the death of many, and forcing the closure in July of the Federal University of Wukari, Taraba as students of the two tribes got drawn into the fray.  Recently, a Catholic Priest, Rev Fr David Tanko, was killed while pursuing\u00a0reconciliation between the groups around the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Federal-University-Wukari.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20408\"\/><figcaption>The Federal University in Wukari<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement in Abuja\u00a0and signed\u00a0by his Media Assistant, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, Ayokunle said the oneness of ChristIan faith by the majority of Tiv and Jukun, they ought to live in brotherly love as commanded by Jesus Christ, the Prince of peace. He prayed for peace to reign between the groups.<br \/><br \/> The statement adds: &#8220;We urge the leaders of Tiv and Jukum to, as a matter of urgency, convene peace meetings\u00a0among all relevant stakeholders with a view to finding lasting solution to the feud.\u00a0<br \/><br \/> &#8220;Reports have it that travelling on Wukari and Katsina-Ala highways has become dangerous and suicidal as travellers who belong to either of the tribes are arrested, killed or set ablaze, just exactly the way the\u00a0Catholic priest was killed.\u00a0<br \/><br \/> &#8220;As a body, CAN is making serious efforts behind the scene with both the Federal Government and the two state governments on how to reconcile the two factions at a peace parley to be hosted as soon as practicable.\u00a0<br \/><br \/> &#8220;We seize this opportunity to\u00a0appeal to the two tiers of government to accelerate the process of an enduring peace process in which CAN is ready to be involved.
