{"id":19493,"date":"2019-07-15T12:20:13","date_gmt":"2019-07-15T12:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=19493"},"modified":"2019-07-15T12:20:13","modified_gmt":"2019-07-15T12:20:13","slug":"in-these-hard-times-nigerians-spend-n3-billion-in-cinemas-in-6-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=19493","title":{"rendered":"In these hard times, Nigerians spend N3 billion in cinemas in 6 months"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By <strong>Anita Eboigbe<\/strong> (<strong>NAN<\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nigerians spent nearly 3, 124, 026, 959 billion Naira to watch box office movies at Nigerian cinemas between January and June.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the figures are according to data provided by cinemas and gathered by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN).<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The year opened with \u2018Aquaman\u2019, \u2018Chief Daddy\u2019 and \u2018Up North\u2019 sitting on the top three of the chart with an estimated combined earnings of 168, 263, 512 million Naira.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movies maintained their positions until the fourth week when \u2018Glass\u2019 debuted at number one with \u2018Aquaman\u2019 taking second place and \u2018Chief Daddy\u2019, third booting \u2018Up North\u2019 to fourth place.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This led to a combined earnings of 91, 409, 100 million Naira which fell to 77, 259, 811 million Naira as January closed with Kevin Hart\u2019s \u2018The Upside\u2019 kicking \u2018Chief Daddy\u2019 to fourth place.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/CINEMA-GRAPHICS-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19494\"\/><figcaption>Infographic showing gross distribution (Source: NAN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">)NAN reports that earnings remained low for February, making it the lowest grossing month with a total of 291, 843, 044 million Naira.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top spots were alternated between \u2018Alita\u2019, \u2018Cold Pursuit\u2019, \u2018What Men Want\u2019, \u2018Escape Room\u2019 and \u2018The UpSide\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By March, viewership picked up steadily and the earnings were almost doubled from that of February leading to a total of 434, 432, 431 million Naira.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018What Men Want\u2019, \u2018Alita\u2019, \u2018Hire A Woman\u2019, \u2018She Is\u2019, \u2018Us\u2019 and \u2018Babymamas\u2019 enjoyed a relatively good run in March but a chunk of the earnings and viewership went to Marvel\u2019s flick \u2018Captain Marvel\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the beginning of April, \u2018HellBoy\u2019, \u2018Shazam\u2019, \u2018Little\u2019 and \u2018Us\u2019 continued to share the top spot with \u2018Captain Marvel\u2019 until the release of the much anticipated \u2018Avengers:Endgame\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NAN also reports that with \u2018Avengers: Endgame\u2019, earnings from April climbed from 186, 929, 188 million Naira in its third week to 342, 382, 389 million Naira in its final week.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The month, which is the highest grossing in 2019, closed with an estimated total earnings of 734, 151, 060 million Naira due to major boost from Disney\u2019s \u2018Endgame\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May, there was a massive dip in earnings similar to that experienced in February. With \u2018Endgame\u2019, \u2018The Intruder\u2019 and \u2018Longshot\u2019, it earned a total of 367, 498, 554 million Naira.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fall in viewership is usual after a global holiday such as Christmas for December\/January and Easter for April.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The numbers picked up in June with \u2018John Wick\u2019, \u2018Godzilla\u2019 and \u2018Aladdin\u2019 leading the numbers.
