Embattled Sen. Ishiaku Abbo (PDP-Adamawa) on Tuesday told members of the Senate investigative panel hearing his alleged case of assault of a nursing mother not to threaten him with suspension.<\/p>\n\n\n
The senator spoke when he appeared before the six-man panel set up by the Senate to investigate him.<\/p>\n\n\n
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that President of the Senate, Dr Ahmad Lawan set up the panel which is headed by Senator Sam Egwu (PDP-Ebonyi) on July 3.<\/p>\n\n\n
Abbo who appeared before his colleagues at exactly 3.15 p.m., told them that the matter was already before the court, hence he would not make comments that could amount to prejudice of the Court process.<\/p>\n\n\n
He also refused to allow the clerk of the panel to put him on oath, as is usual practice.<\/p>\n\n\n
Drama started when he said that he had no business appearing and making comments about the matter anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n
But Abbo said his presence was out of honour for his colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n
Senator Oluremi Tinubu (APC-Lagos) who is also a member of the panel expressed displeasure over Abbo\u2019s comment before the panel.<\/p>\n\n\n
She said, \u201cThe Senate of the Senate carefully selected members of this committee to hear your own side of the story which has gone viral.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cWhat we are doing here as a legislature is a position taken by the Senate to hear from you and others involved.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cThis matter has affected the Senate as an institution and we have been mandated to investigate it.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t sit there on the other side and dictate the modalities and approach we follow as a committee.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cWe are trying to protect the Senate and hear from you, but we can also suspend you because of your attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
At this point, Abbo flared up and said he won\u2019t allow the committee to threaten him with suspension, having earlier informed it that the matter is before a court.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cDear colleagues, I won\u2019t sit here and allow this committee to threaten me with suspension.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cIs it out of place for me to say I\u2019m not addressing you since this matter is before a court of law of competent jurisdiction?<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cI came here to honour you as colleagues after receiving an SMS inviting me here.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cJust the same way I have received SMS from the police. I was arrested, detained and charged to court over this matter. Yet, I\u2019m here out of respect for you as colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cI want you to remember that this matter is before a court of competent jurisdiction and I don\u2019t want to be held in contempt of the Court,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n
After some arguments which turned the venue rowdy, the chairman of the panel, Egwu urged all parties to remain calm.<\/p>\n\n\n
Another member of the panel, Sen. Mathew Urhoghide (APC-Edo) urged his colleagues to hear Abbo off camera.<\/p>\n\n\n
Egwu agreed to Urhoghide\u2019s suggestion as he asked members of the press out of the venue.<\/p>\n\n\n
Egwu said, \u201cWe are not here to go into the area of the matter that is already in court.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cWe are here to look at issues that affect us as a parliament in the eyes of the public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
