The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Ilorin Zonal Office has secured the conviction of Ogundele Adeseye, 24, who was re-arraigned on a one-count amended charge bordering on internet fraud.
\nHe was convicted by Justice Babangana Ashigar of a Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, on April 10, 2019 after he pleaded “guilty” to the charge, following a plea bargain agreement.
\nHe was previously arraigned on a five-count charge, which was later amended to one count after plea bargain agreement was reached.
\nThe charge reads: “That you, Ogundele Adeseye, sometimes in July 2018 or thereabouts in Ilorin within the jurisdiction of this honourable court by means of fraudulent trick that you are a white Caucasian and interested in having a relationship, obtained the cumulative sum of\u00a0$500 (Five Hundred Dollars)\u00a0in form of iTunes gift cards from one Chase Gliglia, an American Citizen whom you met on seeking.com website (sugarbabysite) by chatting with her using the emailbrysonwillians567@gmail.com\u00a0and thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under section 421 of the Criminal code act.”
\nIn his plea, Ogundele said: “My lord, I have learnt my lessons, I have realized that crime and criminality is not good, I am pleading with your lordship to temper justice with mercy.”
\nIn sentencing him, the trial judge held there was a need to enforce judgement that will serve as a deterrent to would-be internet fraudsters.
\n“In accordance with plea bargain agreement, I hereby convict the defendant and sentence him to six months imprisonment,” he said.
