{"id":16634,"date":"2019-04-07T17:15:20","date_gmt":"2019-04-07T17:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=16634"},"modified":"2019-04-07T17:15:20","modified_gmt":"2019-04-07T17:15:20","slug":"nigerian-govt-gives-foreigners-48-hours-to-leave-zamfara-mining-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=16634","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian govt gives foreigners 48 hours to leave Zamfara mining sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigerian government has given all foreigners involved in mining activities in Zamfara State 48 hours to leave the sites.<br \/>\nThe government announced a ban on all mining activities as part of measures to restore peace in the state.<br \/>\nBandits have been attacking villages in Zamfara for almost two years now.<br \/>\nHundreds have been killed while several others have been kidnapped for ransom.<br \/>\nThe bandits also often destroy houses and properties of villagers.<br \/>\nNigerians staged protest marches\u00a0in Abuja and other cities on Saturday demanding urgent action to end killings by the bandits.<br \/>\nFollowing the protests, President Muhammadu Buhari said ending banditry remains a priority of his administration and he would do whatever it takes to save lives.<br \/>\nHe, however, called on Nigerians not to\u00a0politicise\u00a0the matter<br \/>\nThe decision to ban mining and sack foreigners from sites was revealed by the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, on Sunday while briefing State House correspondents in Abuja.<br \/>\nMr Adamu said the government took the measure because intelligence reports \u201cclearly established a strong and glaring nexus between the activities of armed bandits and illicit miners -with both mutually re-enforcing each other\u201d.<br \/>\nAnnouncing that mining activities in Zamfara and other affected states are suspended with immediate effect, the IGP said: \u201cany mining operator who engages in mining activities in the affected locations henceforth will have his licence revoked\u201d.<br \/>\nHe also said: \u201c all foreigners operating in the mining fields should close and leave within 48hours\u201d.<br \/>\nThe Police boss assure the general public, especially in the affected areas, that the security services are doing their best to address the situation.<br \/>\n<strong>Ending banditry<\/strong><br \/>\nMr Mohammed said as part of \u201csustained efforts to flush out, and permanently put an end to armed banditry and criminality in Zamfara State\u201d in particular and the North West in general, the Nigeria Police in collaboration with the Nigerian Military and other Security Services have commenced \u201cOperation PUFF- ADDER\u201d, which, he said, is a full-scale security offensive against the bandits.<br \/>\nHe said the operation is aimed at reclaiming every public space under the control of the bandits and to arrest and bring to book all perpetrators of violence in the area and their collaborators.<br \/>\nThe IGP said the operation also aims to achieve \u201ctotal destruction of all criminal camps and hideouts, mop up all illicit weapons fueling the violence and attain a full restoration of law and order in the affected communities\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cOur commitment at protecting the sanctity of life and property is irrevocable, and we will not scale-down the pressure on the armed bandits until they are totally flushed-out,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThe Police boss appealed for the cooperation of local communities, especially the traditional and religious leaders within such communities.<br \/>\n<strong>Use of Social Media<\/strong><br \/>\nThe IGP also said the Nigerian government had noted the use of social media to \u201cspread fake news, falsehood and deliberate misinformation\u201d.<br \/>\nHe, therefore, urged citizens to exercise restraint in circulating unconfirmed information capable of doing more damage.<br \/>\n\u201c Let us not allow the social media to hijack our sense of judgment and capture our minds negatively,\u201d the IGP said.<br \/>\nBy\u00a0<strong>Premium Times<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigerian government has given all foreigners involved in mining activities in Zamfara State 48 hours to leave the sites.
