{"id":14522,"date":"2019-01-12T16:32:29","date_gmt":"2019-01-12T16:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=14522"},"modified":"2019-01-12T16:32:29","modified_gmt":"2019-01-12T16:32:29","slug":"n3-trillion-for-cars-importation-yearly-is-proof-auto-industry-viable-in-nigeria-says-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=14522","title":{"rendered":"N3 trillion for cars importation yearly is proof auto industry viable in Nigeria, says Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The nearly N3 trillion ($8 billion) Nigerians spend in importing vehicles annually is proof that there is a large market for a viable automotive industry in the country that will create jobs and contribute to the growth of the Nigerian economy, according to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah.<br \/>\nHe spoke last Thursday at the kick-off of the Nigeria-Volkswagen meeting intended to explore and exploit the auto industry in the country.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14523\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14523\" style=\"width: 183px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14523\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/images.jpeg-2-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nVolkswagen was a major player in the country&#8217;s automobile industry for decades, assembling its cars from its factory in Nigeria. It packed up and left due to a downturn and unfavourable operating conditions over two and half decades ago.<br \/>\nEfforts are on at different levels to bring the manufacturer back as a major player.<br \/>\nEnelamah said that the development of the country&#8217;s automotive industry is a key plank of the FG&#8217;s\u00a0Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) which aims to grow the economy, invest in Nigerians and build a globally competitive economy.<br \/>\nEnelamah spoke in Lagos at the Volkswagen kickoff event with senior management of the automaker led by Thomas Schaefer, the Head of Sub-Saharan Region and Managing Director, Volkswagen South Africa.<br \/>\nThe kickoff workshop was organized for the two sides to agree on the next steps and concrete action plans needed to operationalize a September 2018 agreement for Volkswagen to lead development of Nigeria into an automotive hub.<br \/>\nAt the event, Schaefer said:\u00a0\u201cAfrica&#8217;s time is now and Nigeria&#8217;s time is now. There&#8217;s no doubt about that.
