{"id":13628,"date":"2018-11-22T14:29:23","date_gmt":"2018-11-22T14:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=13628"},"modified":"2018-11-22T14:29:23","modified_gmt":"2018-11-22T14:29:23","slug":"collaboration-will-improve-our-human-capital-development-says-vp-as-carribean-varsity-partners-maritime-varsity-and-unilag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=13628","title":{"rendered":"Collaboration will improve our human capital development, says VP as Carribean varsity partners Maritime varsity and Unilag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <strong>Laolu Akande,<\/strong> Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media &amp; Publicity), Office of the Vice President<br \/>\n<strong>*VP pledges support\u00a0for Nigerian\u00a0CNN Heroes Honoree, Abisoye\u00a0Ajayi-Akinfolarin<\/strong><br \/>\nThe academic partnership between Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) in Jamaica, and two Nigerian universities \u2013 University of Lagos and the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State \u2013 would be mutually beneficial to each country\u2019s human capital development, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.<br \/>\nProf. Osinbajo stated this during a meeting on Wednesday\u00a0at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with representatives from the three universities; a delegation from the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) led by the President, CMU, Prof. Fritz Pinnock; and his Nigerian counterparts &#8211; the Vice Chancellor, Maritime University, Prof. Maureen Etebu; and the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.<br \/>\nAccording to the Vice President, \u201cThe Maritime University is an important part of our journey of developing the Niger Delta, as it would tackle restiveness among youths by providing them with education and training, and so benefit them. So, the Maritime University is a win-win for Niger Delta and Nigeria.\u201d<br \/>\nProf. Osinbajo further said the partnership between the CMU and the two Nigerian universities (Maritime University and UNILAG) was coming at the right time to help develop the country\u2019s human capital.<br \/>\n\u201cOur relationship with Jamaica is a very important one for us and we must continue to explore the very many areas of collaboration to benefit us all. We are truly grateful for the hand of fellowship extended to us,\u201d the VP added.<br \/>\nAlso at the meeting was the Acting High Commissioner of Jamaica, John Clarke; and a former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, who is the Pro-Chancellor\/Chairman of the Governing Council of Maritime University.<br \/>\nThe Maritime University, which commenced full academic activities in April, is part of the Buhari administration\u2019s Niger Delta New Vision aimed at developing the region.<br \/>\nSimilarly, Prof. Etebu said the CMU has offered scholarships to two students of the Maritime University. &#8220;We are going to draw strength in terms of experience and exposure from the Carribean university,\u201d she noted.<br \/>\nAlso speaking, Prof. Ogundipe said UNILAG\u2019s postgraduate programmes in Maritime Studies would gain from the collaboration with CMU to meet international standards.<br \/>\nIn his remarks, Pinnock noted that he was impressed with the ongoing work at the Maritime University in Delta State, while Clarke thanked the Vice President for the progress of work at the University.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are bringing experience, accreditation, global certification; we want to leverage this with both universities \u2013 Nigerian Maritime University and the University of Lagos, which are two fantastic universities. And we see this collaboration is about strengthening each university, learning from each other and building together,\u201d Pinnock\u00a0said.<br \/>\nMeanwhile, the Vice President also on Wednesday\u00a0received a delegation of Pearls Africa Foundation\u00a0led by Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin, who was named among the Top 10 CNN Heroes of 2018.<br \/>\nThe Foundation promotes the cause and advancement of young girls, with focus on vulnerable young girls living in under-served communities, through training in technology, skill acquisitions, entrepreneurship, mentorship and internship placements.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is incredible to see these young leaders who are so sharp and so creative,\u201d noting that \u201cit is very innovative that the girls are the lead players in their various fields,&#8221;\u00a0Prof Osinbajo stated.<br \/>\nHe\u00a0also commended Ajayi-Akinfolarin for her work, and pledged his support for her CNN Heroes nomination. He further stated that he was greatly inspired by the young girls and the work they were doing<br \/>\nThe delegation was made up of Sharon Okpoe who created a website, Makoko Fresh, to help connect fishermen in Makoko with buyers; Matti Mariam\u00a0developed a website called Hope Basket, enabling people to make donations to beggars and Break The Blade, a website created by Nosirat Alade, campaigning against female genital mutilation.<br \/>\nAjayi-Akinfolarin, in her own remarks, said the good things about the various projects the girls were involved with was the fact that they identified the problems themselves and proffer the solutions. They use computer-programming language to build the various websites.\u00a0 She further stated that Makoko Fresh website has made over N200,000 worth of sales in less than two months, connecting suppliers of fish with those who demand it.<br \/>\nIn his remarks, Softcom representative, Seindemi Olobayo, who was also present at the meeting, stated that their company would provide mentoring platforms for the girls, internship opportunities during holidays and experience tours within the company.
