{"id":12738,"date":"2018-10-16T13:03:41","date_gmt":"2018-10-16T13:03:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=12738"},"modified":"2018-10-16T13:03:41","modified_gmt":"2018-10-16T13:03:41","slug":"saraki-condemns-boko-haram-killing-of-aid-worker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=12738","title":{"rendered":"Saraki Condemns Boko Haram Killing of Aid Worker\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m5127541954424093907\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\"><strong>&#8230;As Senate Observes 2-Minute silence in her honour <\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\">President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has condemned the murder of Hauwa Leman, an aid worker with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), by Boko Haram insurgents.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nSaraki in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, in Abuja, noted that humanitarian workers who work in crisis zones to provide necessary support for victims are most selfless and courageous persons and therefore should never be targets of harm.<br \/>\nAlso, the Senate on Tuesday observed a two-minute silence in honour of Leman. This followed\u00a0a motion raised by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and subsequent debate on the issue where the Senate resolved to pay official condolence visit to the family of the deceased.<br \/>\nThe Upper Chamber also resolved to ensure that the Federal Government, through its security agencies, take necessary measures to secure the freedom of both Leah Sharibu and other surviving members of the ICRC being held hostage by the insurgents.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-4449862127881527237yiv80290409984589\" class=\"m_-4449862127881527237yiv8029040998graf m_-4449862127881527237yiv8029040998graf--p m_-4449862127881527237yiv8029040998graf-after--p\">Speaking on the resolution, Saraki said:\u00a0\u201cDistinguished Colleagues, irrespective of the decision that we have taken, I believe that our committees on defence and security, as part of their own responsibilities, should engage with the security agencies to find out if there are other issues that need to be addressed in order to prevent the reoccurrence of such sad incident\u201d.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-4449862127881527237yiv80290409984589\" class=\"m_-4449862127881527237yiv8029040998graf m_-4449862127881527237yiv8029040998graf--p m_-4449862127881527237yiv8029040998graf-after--p\">He also commiserated with the family of the deceased and the ICRC over the unfortunate incident and stated that the Senate will continue to work with the nation\u2019s Armed Forces to stop the killings and improve security across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Saraki had earlier in a tweet on his personal handle, @bukolasaraki, wrote that: \u201cI join Nigerians and the international community in condemning the murder of Hauwa Leman &#8211; an aid worker with @ICRC, by Boko Haram.<br \/>\n\u201cAs I said on the 18th of September 2018, humanitarian workers who go into troubled spots to alleviate people\u2019s suffering are some of\u00a0the most courageous and selfless people on the planet.
