{"id":12165,"date":"2018-09-27T11:50:10","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T11:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=12165"},"modified":"2018-09-27T11:50:10","modified_gmt":"2018-09-27T11:50:10","slug":"nigerian-universities-up-the-ante-in-world-ranking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=12165","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian universities up the ante in world ranking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three universities in Nigeria \u2013 Covenant University, University of Ibadan, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka \u2013 have been included in the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.<br \/>\nThe list, launched on Wednesday at Times Higher Education\u2019s World Academic Summit at the National University of Singapore, featured 86 countries, up from 81.<br \/>\nCovenant University is ranked 601- 800, out of more than 1,250 higher education institutions on the list, same with the University of Ibadan.<br \/>\nUniversity of Nigeria, Nsukka, is ranked 1001+.<br \/>\nThis is a slight improvement for Nigeria, compared to last year\u2019s ranking where only one school, the University of Ibadan, made the list and was ranked 801\u20131000.<br \/>\nCovenant University and University of Ibadan occupy fifth and sixth position respectively on the table of all the 28 African ranked institutions for the 2019 ranking.<br \/>\nUniversity of Nigeria, Nsukka, is 23 on the African table.<br \/>\nSouth African institutions \u2013 University of Cape Town, ranked =156; University of the Witwatersrand, ranked 201\u2013250; Stellenbosch University, ranked 301\u2013350; and University of KwaZulu-Natal, ranked 401\u2013500 \u2013 occupy first, second, third, and fourth position on the African table.<br \/>\nAnother three South African universities \u2013 University of Johannesburg, ranked 601\u2013800; University of Pretoria, ranked 601\u2013800; and University of the Western Cape, 601\u2013800 \u2013 sit below Nigeria on the African table, occupying seventh, eighth, and ninth positions respectively.<br \/>\nOnly one university in Ghana \u2013 University of Ghana \u2013 is included in the 2019 ranking. It is ranked 801\u20131000 and occupies the 12th position on the African table.<br \/>\nGlobally, Oxford University, United Kingdom, for the third consecutive year, is at the number one position.<br \/>\nAnother university in the UK, Cambridge, retains the second position, while Stanford in the U.S. holds steady in third.<br \/>\nAmong the top 10, are Massachusetts Institute of Technology, U.S., fourth; California Institute of Technology, U.S., fifth; Harvard University, U.S., sixth; Princeton University, U.S., seventh; Yale University, U.S., eighth; Imperial College London, UK, ninth; and University of Chicago, U.S., 10th.<br \/>\n\u201cTimes Higher Education\u2019s World University Rankings is the most rigorous there is, and this is our most globally competitive listing to date,\u201d said Phil Baty, Editorial Director of Global Rankings for Times Higher Education.<br \/>\nThe ranking is now in its 15th year.<br \/>\nThe universities are graded in the core areas like teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.<br \/>\nBy <strong>Premium Times.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three universities in Nigeria \u2013 Covenant University, University of Ibadan, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka \u2013 have been included in the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
