{"id":1096,"date":"2017-03-13T22:11:01","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T22:11:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=1096"},"modified":"2017-03-13T22:11:01","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T22:11:01","slug":"we-must-develop-underground-space-to-decongest-cities-afe-babalola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=1096","title":{"rendered":"We must develop underground space to decongest cities -Afe Babalola"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Development of underground space to reduce surface congestion and\u00a0bridge Nigeria&#8217;s infrastructural gap is overdue, Aare Afe Babalola\u00a0said Monday.<br \/>\nThe founder and chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti,\u00a0ABUAD, noted this when members of the Tunnelling Association of\u00a0Nigeria, TAN, visited him in Ado-Ekiti.<br \/>\nBabalola said Nigeria was ripe for the tunnelling technology,\u00a0especially in expanding facilities for transportation, power and water\u00a0supply to reduce stress in major cities, especially Lagos.<br \/>\n&#8220;I know tunnels in London, in France and other major cities in the\u00a0world. We need it here in Nigeria also, especially in Lagos\u201d, he\u00a0emphasized.<br \/>\nThe ABUAD founder said, although the idea of tunnels is not new\u00a0globally, the move to introduce it as solution to Nigeria&#8217;s\u00a0infrastructural challenges in national planning \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cis a very lofty\u00a0idea that we should key into.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe said ABUAD, as a leading engineering institution in the country,\u00a0would partner with TAN in its bid to promote capacity-building in\u00a0tunnelling as an emerging engineering field in Nigeria.<br \/>\nEngr Imo Ekpo, who led the delegation, said they were in the\u00a0university to seek collaboration and participation towards the association\u2019s first international tunneling conference scheduled to\u00a0hold between 29th &#8211; 30th March in Lagos.<br \/>\nWith the team, &#8220;Developing the Tunnelling and Underground Space\u00a0Industry in Nigeria&#8221;, Ekpo said, the association is currently working\u00a0on a 10-year capacity building plan in partnership with one federal,\u00a0state and private university.<br \/>\n&#8220;We&#8217;re looking at the prospects of opening up our infrastructures to\u00a0the best practices globally and ease off surface utilities by\u00a0developing the underground space in Nigeria,&#8221; Ekpo said.<br \/>\nHe noted that Nigeria, as a member nation of the ITA, now has access\u00a0to specific international scholarships for tunnellng and underground\u00a0development as well as exchange programmes with countries currently developing major underground projects.<br \/>\nEkpo disclosed that the President of the International \u00a0 \u00a0Tunnelling\u00a0Association, Dr. Tarcisio Celestino is leading other participants all\u00a0over the world to the gathering at the Lagos Oriental Hotel later in the month.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Development of underground space to reduce surface congestion and\u00a0bridge Nigeria&#8217;s infrastructural gap is overdue, Aare Afe Babalola\u00a0said Monday.
