The suspects were identified as Abubakar of Jaya and Ubale Change of Matazu, according to Katsina-based reporting.

Link to Rabe Abubakar’s abduction

The security operation is particularly significant because Kachalla Maha’s network has repeatedly been linked in local reports to the abduction of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information.

Abubakar and his wife were abducted on May 30, 2026, while travelling through the Matazu area of Katsina State. The retired general subsequently died while in captivity. The Katsina State Government said his death resulted from complications associated with diabetes and hypertension.

President Bola Tinubu subsequently expressed condolences to the family and confirmed that Abubakar had died while in the custody of his captors.

Intelligence expected from suspects

Security sources are expected to interrogate the captured suspects to establish their individual roles within the network and obtain information about its leadership structure, operational methods, hideouts, supply routes and possible collaborators.

The arrests could also provide investigators with intelligence for tracing other members of the network and determining whether the suspects were involved in previous attacks across Katsina and neighbouring states.

The latest development comes amid intensified operations by Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, across the North-West.

On September 14 and 15, troops operating in Katsina and Kebbi rescued 31 kidnapped victims, arrested two suspected terrorists and neutralised two others, according to the task force. Ammunition, a motorcycle, camouflage clothing and other items were also recovered.

Earlier in September, Operation FANSAN YAMMA troops also conducted operations in Kaduna, Zamfara and other parts of the North-West, including the arrest of suspected terrorist and logistics figures and the recovery of weapons and ammunition.

As of Sunday evening, the military had not publicly released full details of the latest Katsina operation, including the exact number of suspects captured, weapons recovered or the precise role played by regular troops and the Community Watch Corps.

The identities and alleged roles of the arrested suspects will therefore remain subject to further investigation as security agencies continue efforts to dismantle the network associated with Kachalla Maha.

Security forces and members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps have reportedly captured senior members of a notorious bandit network linked to the abduction of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in Katsina State.
