What began as\u00a0a bitter theological\u00a0dispute over remarks\u00a0attributed to prominent\u00a0Sokoto Islamic scholar\u00a0Sheikh Musa Ayuba\u00a0Lukuwa has escalated\u00a0into a violent\u00a0chain of events\u00a0involving alleged death\u00a0threats, street demonstrations, a knife attack\u00a0inside a mosque\u00a0and the killing\u00a0of the alleged\u00a0attacker by a\u00a0mob.<\/p>\n

The latest incident\u00a0occurred on Friday, September 11, shortly\u00a0after the Jumu’at\u00a0prayer at Lukuwa\u00a0Mosque in the\u00a0Mabera area of\u00a0Sokoto metropolis.<\/p>\n

A man who\u00a0was among the\u00a0worshippers attacked Lukuwa\u00a0with a knife\u00a0shortly after the\u00a0prayer. The attacker\u00a0was subsequently overpowered\u00a0by worshippers and\u00a0beaten to death, according to police\u00a0and multiple sources.<\/p>\n

The Sokoto State\u00a0Police Command confirmed\u00a0the death of\u00a0the alleged assailant\u00a0and said investigations\u00a0were under way.<\/p>\n

The development has\u00a0brought to a\u00a0dangerous point a\u00a0dispute that had\u00a0already divided sections\u00a0of Sokoto’s Muslim\u00a0community over allegations\u00a0that Lukuwa made\u00a0offensive remarks concerning\u00a0the parents of\u00a0Prophet Muhammad.<\/p>\n

But the cleric at the centre of the controversy\u00a0 survived the attack and has now appealed for calm, forgiveness and restraint.<\/p>\n

In a video\u00a0circulated after the\u00a0attack, Lukuwa appeared\u00a0with a plaster\u00a0covering part of\u00a0his neck and\u00a0told followers that\u00a0his injury was\u00a0not life-threatening.<\/p>\n

He urged supporters\u00a0not to retaliate\u00a0and appealed against\u00a0any action that\u00a0could further inflame\u00a0tensions in Sokoto.<\/p>\n

The cleric’s intervention\u00a0is significant because\u00a0the controversy surrounding\u00a0him had, in\u00a0recent weeks, moved\u00a0beyond theological disagreement\u00a0into threats, protests\u00a0and demands for\u00a0official intervention.<\/p>\n

From theological dispute\u00a0to security crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n

The dispute centres on comments attributed to Lukuwa during a sermon in which he reportedly\u00a0 cited an Islamic tradition concerning the parents of Prophet Muhammad.<\/p>\n

Reports indicate that\u00a0some scholars, particularly\u00a0those associated with\u00a0Sufi Tariqa traditions\u00a0in Sokoto, regarded\u00a0the position attributed\u00a0to Lukuwa as\u00a0offensive.<\/p>\n

The controversy prompted\u00a0several Islamic organisations\u00a0and individuals to\u00a0petition authorities, demanding\u00a0that the allegations\u00a0against the cleric\u00a0be investigated and, if an offence\u00a0was established, that\u00a0he face appropriate\u00a0legal consequences.<\/p>\n

Among those who\u00a0publicly criticised the\u00a0alleged remarks was\u00a0Sheikh Abubakar Yagawal, leader of the\u00a0National Sufi Council\u00a0of Nigeria and\u00a0a National Commissioner\u00a0of the National\u00a0Hajj Commission of\u00a0Nigeria.<\/p>\n

At a September\u00a04 press conference, Yagawal urged Muslims\u00a0to reject what\u00a0he described as\u00a0blasphemous content by\u00a0clerics, arguing that\u00a0religious leaders had\u00a0a responsibility to\u00a0protect peace and\u00a0social cohesion.<\/p>\n

Yagawal described the\u00a0alleged remarks attributed\u00a0to Lukuwa as\u00a0\u201cunbecoming\u201d and capable\u00a0of provoking violence\u00a0within Muslim communities. He said the\u00a0coalition of Islamic\u00a0groups wanted the\u00a0Federal Government, Sokoto\u00a0State Government and\u00a0security agencies to\u00a0investigate the matter\u00a0and take appropriate\u00a0action.<\/p>\n

But significantly, the\u00a0groups opposing Lukuwa\u00a0did not publicly\u00a0call for his\u00a0extrajudicial punishment. Their stated position, according to reports, was that the\u00a0allegations should be\u00a0investigated and resolved\u00a0through lawful processes.<\/p>\n

A report by\u00a0Peace Magazine said\u00a0the Islamic organisations\u00a0specifically sought investigation\u00a0and prosecution if\u00a0the allegations were\u00a0established, while rejecting\u00a0street justice.<\/p>\n

This position is crucial following\u00a0Friday’s violence.<\/p>\n

The alleged threat\u00a0that preceded the\u00a0attack<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before the stabbing, tensions had already\u00a0intensified over alleged\u00a0threats against Lukuwa\u00a0by Sokoto-based\u00a0figure Dahiru Shehu\u00a0Mai Barewa.<\/p>\n

Mai Barewa was\u00a0accused of threatening\u00a0to kill Lukuwa\u00a0over the controversial\u00a0remarks. The alleged\u00a0threats subsequently became\u00a0 a subject of\u00a0police and court\u00a0proceedings.<\/p>\n

By September 8, police had arrested\u00a0about 20 people\u00a0following protests by\u00a0supporters demanding Mai\u00a0Barewa’s release. The \u00a0protesters reportedly objected\u00a0to his continued\u00a0detention after a\u00a0court order directing\u00a0his re-arrest\u00a0and remand.<\/p>\n

Police said some\u00a0of the protesters\u00a0became unruly and\u00a0attempted to force\u00a0their way into\u00a0the process surrounding\u00a0his detention.<\/p>\n

The development demonstrated\u00a0how quickly the\u00a0dispute had moved\u00a0beyond religious argument\u00a0into a security\u00a0problem.<\/p>\n

Yet despite the\u00a0threats, the Friday\u00a0attack appears to\u00a0have come from\u00a0an individual who\u00a0was inside Lukuwa’s\u00a0mosque among worshippers.<\/p>\n

What happened inside\u00a0the mosque?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Accounts differ on\u00a0some details of\u00a0the attack, including\u00a0the precise location\u00a0and nature of\u00a0Lukuwa’s injuries.<\/p>\n

An initial police\u00a0account reported that\u00a0the assailant stabbed\u00a0Lukuwa in the\u00a0stomach immediately after\u00a0Friday prayers and\u00a0that the alleged\u00a0attacker was then\u00a0killed by a\u00a0mob.<\/p>\n

A subsequent statement\u00a0from police gave\u00a0a more detailed\u00a0account, saying a\u00a0distress call was\u00a0received at about\u00a01:50 p.m. and that\u00a0an unidentified man\u00a0entered the mosque\u00a0after Jumu’at prayer\u00a0before attacking Lukuwa\u00a0with a sharp\u00a0knife.<\/p>\n

Police spokesman DSP\u00a0Ahmad Rufai said\u00a0the attacker inflicted\u00a0deep cuts on\u00a0Lukuwa’s neck and\u00a0left hand before\u00a0 worshippers overpowered\u00a0him and killed\u00a0him.<\/p>\n

The police subsequently\u00a0appealed for calm\u00a0and warned against\u00a0reprisals.<\/p>\n

Trust Radio, citing sources, reported that the alleged attacker had been seated among worshippers, reportedly in one of the front rows, before attacking Lukuwa after the prayer. The report said the attack was linked by sources to the earlier sermon and the controversy surrounding the cleric’s comments.<\/p>\n

The identity and\u00a0precise motive of\u00a0the dead suspect\u00a0have not been\u00a0publicly established by\u00a0the police.<\/p>\n

While the attack occurred against the backdrop of the controversy surrounding Lukuwa, investigators have yet to publicly establish whether the alleged assailant acted because of the disputed remarks, whether he was acting alone or whether anyone else encouraged or facilitated the attack.<\/p>\n

Lukuwa breaks his\u00a0silence<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the immediate\u00a0aftermath, Lukuwa’s message\u00a0was notably different\u00a0from the increasingly\u00a0confrontational atmosphere\u00a0 that had surrounded\u00a0the controversy.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the\u00a0attack, the cleric\u00a0sought to reassure\u00a0his followers that\u00a0he was alive\u00a0and well.<\/p>\n

He also appealed\u00a0directly for calm.<\/p>\n

Lukuwa’s intervention effectively\u00a0placed him at\u00a0the centre of\u00a0two competing narratives: one portraying him\u00a0as a cleric\u00a0whose alleged words\u00a0had offended sections\u00a0of the Muslim\u00a0community, and another\u00a0portraying him as\u00a0the target of\u00a0an increasingly dangerous\u00a0campaign of intimidation.<\/p>\n

His decision to\u00a0urge followers not\u00a0to retaliate could\u00a0prove significant in\u00a0preventing the Friday\u00a0incident from developing\u00a0into a wider\u00a0cycle of revenge.<\/p>\n

The cleric’s appeal\u00a0came as police\u00a0simultaneously urged residents\u00a0to remain peaceful\u00a0and law-abiding<\/p>\n

Clerics divided \u2014 but\u00a0united against chaos<\/strong><\/p>\n

The reactions of\u00a0Islamic scholars have\u00a0revealed both the\u00a0depth of the\u00a0theological disagreement\u00a0and a\u00a0 concern about the\u00a0consequences of violence.<\/p>\n

Yagawal has been\u00a0among the strongest\u00a0 critics of the\u00a0remarks attributed to\u00a0Lukuwa.<\/p>\n

He argued that\u00a0Muslims should reject\u00a0clerics who propagate\u00a0what he regarded\u00a0as blasphemous content, saying such utterances\u00a0could undermine peaceful\u00a0coexistence.<\/p>\n

But the position\u00a0publicly advanced by\u00a0the coalition was\u00a0that the allegations\u00a0should be investigated\u00a0by the authorities\u00a0rather than settled\u00a0through violence.<\/p>\n

This position becomes particularly\u00a0 relevant after Friday’s\u00a0mob killing.<\/p>\n

The death of\u00a0the alleged attacker\u00a0means that a\u00a0potentially critical witness\u00a0to the circumstances\u00a0surrounding the stabbing\u00a0 can no longer\u00a0be questioned by\u00a0 investigators.<\/p>\n

It also raises\u00a0a separate question: whether those who\u00a0participated in the\u00a0mob killing will\u00a0themselves face investigation.<\/p>\n

As of the\u00a0latest police account, no arrest had\u00a0been made in\u00a0connection with the\u00a0mob killing. Police\u00a0said the situation\u00a0was under control\u00a0and appealed for\u00a0calm.<\/p>\n

The Lukuwa controversy\u00a0did not begin\u00a0with Friday’s stabbing.<\/p>\n

Sokoto has already\u00a0witnessed deadly consequences\u00a0from allegations of\u00a0blasphemy and religious\u00a0offence.<\/p>\n

In 2023, a\u00a0butcher, Usman Buba, was beaten to\u00a0death following an\u00a0argument over a\u00a0religious matter at\u00a0the Sokoto main\u00a0abattoir after allegations\u00a0of blasphemy circulated\u00a0against him. The\u00a0allegation was disputed\u00a0by eyewitnesses cited\u00a0in\u00a0subsequent reporting. Lukuwa\u00a0later led the\u00a0funeral prayer for\u00a0Buba.<\/p>\n

The history is\u00a0a reminder of\u00a0the combustible nature\u00a0of accusations involving\u00a0religion in the\u00a0state.<\/p>\n

In the present\u00a0case, the sequence\u00a0is particularly troubling.<\/p>\n

First came the\u00a0controversial sermon.<\/p>\n

Then came denunciations\u00a0by sections of\u00a0the Muslim community.<\/p>\n

Petitions followed.<\/p>\n

Threats were allegedly\u00a0issued.<\/p>\n

A suspect was\u00a0arrested and his\u00a0supporters demonstrated\u00a0for his release.<\/p>\n

And now a\u00a0cleric has been\u00a0attacked inside his\u00a0mosque, while the\u00a0alleged attacker has\u00a0been killed by\u00a0a mob.<\/p>\n

The unanswered questions<\/strong><\/p>\n

For investigators, several\u00a0questions remain.<\/p>\n

Who was the\u00a0man who attacked\u00a0Lukuwa?<\/p>\n

What exactly motivated\u00a0him?<\/p>\n

Was the attack\u00a0connected to the\u00a0allegations over the\u00a0cleric’s sermon?<\/p>\n

Had he previously\u00a0threatened Lukuwa?<\/p>\n

Did anybody assist, encourage or facilitate\u00a0the attack?<\/p>\n

And, perhaps most\u00a0importantly, who participated\u00a0in the mob\u00a0killing that followed?<\/p>\n

The answers are important\u00a0because the Friday\u00a0incident involves two\u00a0separate acts of\u00a0violence: the alleged\u00a0attempted killing of\u00a0a cleric and\u00a0the subsequent killing\u00a0of the alleged\u00a0attacker without a\u00a0judicial process.<\/p>\n

Neither can be\u00a0justified simply by\u00a0the other.<\/p>\n

The police would have\u00a0to establish what happened, while the courts\u00a0– not mobs – determine\u00a0criminal responsibility.<\/p>\n

The bigger danger<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most disturbing feature of the Sokoto crisis may not be the original theological disagreement\u00a0 but the speed with which disagreement has evolved into threats and physical violence.<\/p>\n

A religious dispute\u00a0that could have\u00a0been handled through\u00a0scholarly debate, community\u00a0mediation or the\u00a0courts instead became\u00a0entangled with threats, protests and now\u00a0bloodshed.<\/p>\n

The issue is\u00a0no longer simply\u00a0whether Lukuwa’s alleged\u00a0remarks were religiously\u00a0acceptable.<\/p>\n

It is whether\u00a0religious disagreement\u00a0can remain within\u00a0the boundaries of\u00a0law, scholarship and\u00a0peaceful debate.<\/p>\n

Lukuwa’s own post-attack appeal offers\u00a0one possible answer.<\/p>\n

He survived the\u00a0knife attack.<\/p>\n

The alleged attacker\u00a0did not survive\u00a0the mob.<\/p>\n

The challenge now\u00a0is to ensure\u00a0that Friday’s deaths\u00a0and injuries do\u00a0not become the\u00a0beginning of another\u00a0cycle of retaliation.<\/p>\n

The police have\u00a0urged residents to\u00a0remain calm.<\/p>\n

Lukuwa has appealed\u00a0against anger and\u00a0revenge.<\/p>\n

And the Islamic\u00a0groups that first\u00a0raised the controversy\u00a0have already demonstrated, at least in\u00a0their publicly stated\u00a0position, that they\u00a0want the allegations\u00a0addressed through investigation\u00a0and law.<\/p>\n
