From Wole Adedeji, Ilorin
Authorities of the University of Ilorin will Monday hold a crucal meeting with the leaders of the Institution’s Students Union to dialogue on the newly introduced fee of the University.
The University had at the weekend posted on the students portal total increase in various fees from N35,000 to as much as N55,000 excluding hostel accommodations ranging from N40,000 to N100,000
The Students Union Government instantly reacted to the development describing it as laughable, adding that the students would resist the move.
The Students Union President, Animashaun Oluseyi in a statement had said; “Our tolerance level was punched and almost taken for granted by recent release of school fees for 2018/2019 academic session.
“The increment ranges from 10000 to 17500 depending on programme/faculty. It is not only outrageous but absurd given the present economic situation of this country.
“Many are self sponsored while majority of us are from parents in States where salaries are not paid either regularly or at all for months!
“We are stakeholders with strong belief in the University dream. The VC and his team should know better that our sacrifices should be rewarded rather than increasing the suffering packages.
“Hence, *NO STUDENTS SHOULD PAY*! We shall call for meeting with the management for intellectual discourse. We are not rascals but our approach shall be that of radical and sound minded fellows. We shall seek peace in resolving matter.
However. Mr. Kunle Akogun, Director; Corporate Affairs of the University in a statement observed that following what he described “the misinformation currently trending on the social media over the slight adjustment in the university charges,” it wanted to assure students of the management’s good intentions.
He disclosed the slight increase was subject to negotiations which a special meeting between students and management of the institution would address on Monday, according to the University spokesman.
