Dear Devaan,
I am a strong follower of your even on facebook. keep it up please.
I am a young man who just finished my degree in Economics. I served in Ekiti state and I am now living in Abuja with my senior brother.
He promised to help me get a job and he knows so many people but till now, no hope.
He has been telling me to be patient, be patient, but I am getting tired. Since I have been around I am always going on errands for him and his wife. I have no privacy and my friends don’t feel free when they come around.I am getting tired. I think he is playing tricks on me so as to have an extra help in the house. I am getting fed up, in fact I am fed up.
Last time, some months ago, my friend was telling me of one of his uncles who owns a factory in Togo. He says the uncle prefers to work with Nigerians because he wants to help, that I can work in admin or accounts. Also he says the start off salary is N150,000.00.
When I told my brother he simply said no that I should stay in Abuja, because he is still looking for a job for me.
Please what do you say? This man is using me OK?
Dan

Dear Dan,
Your story is nothing new.
I don’t know your brother and I know some people can be exploitative. The fact remains that I know many people with similar challenges. White collar jobs are extremely scarce. You didn’t tell me how long you have been living with the man but since you say you just finished school, I won’t to believe it has not been more than 1 year.
My brother, I suggest you think up a very good idea for something you can start for yourself that may not be too capital intensive, then beg your brother for help be it cash or kind. If he refuses to help in anyway, you may conclude you are being used but please try first.
I also suggest you ignore that offer of work in Togo from someone you don’t know directily. It might be a trick to lure you into something sinister. Don’t let impatience get you into a more difficult spot.
All the best
