Politics often throws up strange drama, what with the involvement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in Rivers State wading into the rift between APC’s Minister Rotimi Amaechi and his former protege, Senator Magnus Abe.

A statement from the PDP Chairman’s office tells the strange tale:

In his avowed commitment to sustain the existing peace and progress in the State, the Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bro. Felix Obuah met with a cross section of the All Progressives Congress (APC) members who are supporters of Senator Magnus Abe and Transportation Minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi over the weekend.

The PDP Chairman who spoke on the backdrop of the severed relationship between the two chieftains of the APC whose quarrel was exacerbated during the party’s Ward Congress on July 29, 2017, charged politicians to exhibit character that would engender peace and development of the State.

Bro. Obuah said he was moved to intervene in the rift, noting that both Senator Abe and former Governor Amaechi were his subjects, adding “we only differ politically; we are all Rivers people”.

The State PDP Chairman said he would not renege on his philosophy of politics without bitterness, calling on political leaders in the State to propagate peace at all times irrespective of party affiliations.

Bro. Obuah called on other political parties in the State to borrow a leaf from the PDP which concluded her Ward, Local Government and State Congresses without raising of dusts or agitations.

“The sole objective of politics is to enthrone good governance to the people. Politics should be devoid of a situation where members of the party would feel slighted and the leadership must not attempt to hijack the party for pecuniary interests and self aggrandizement”, Bro. Obuah advised.

In their separate speeches, the supporters thanked the State PDP Chairman for his peaceful disposition, describing him as a worthy, exemplary and non-partisan leader whose actions truly reflect his title of Mba-Anabara Agu of Orashi Kingdom.

Mr. John E. Elechi who spoke on behalf of Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s supporters said they were highly pleased with Bro. Obuah whose mature and dispassionate manner in settling the rift has gone a long way to douse tensions. He gave assurance that his group would take his advice and chart a new course in the State APC.

In his own response, representative of Senator Magnus Abe’s supporters, Mr. Neeka L. Nwiepe said Bro. Obuah’s move is invaluable and described him as a God-fearing man.

Mr. Nwiepe also assured the State PDP Chairman of their resolve to tow the line of peace in the State, noting that Bro. Obuah has left no one in doubt on his passion for a strong, peaceful, progressive and united Rivers State.

They unanimously agreed to convey the decision of their visit to the Rivers PDP Chairman, Bro. Felix Obuah to their leaders.
