It was a Thursday of near violence in the cities of Kano and Jos as supporters of two former governors, Ibrahim Shekarau and Jonah Jang of Plateau State, gave security agents cause for concern around the courts where their principals got bail.

Ibrahim Shekarau.

Jang’s supporters would not allow him to be returned to detention until his bail conditions were met; while Shekarau’s had to be tear-gassed and dispersed around the court before proceedings started. They waved placards that berated the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

It was a different story after Shekarau got bail as his supporters erupted in joyous celebrations.

Both former state chief executives got bail in the sum of N100 million each with sureties in like sum, but other conditions were varied. Shekarau, was required, among other conditions, to provide sureties one of who must be a civil servant in either federal or state service not below the rank of director.

In Jos, Justice Daniel Longji said one of Jang’s sureties must be a First Class traditional ruler within the court’s jurisdiction who should deposit his international passport.

The former governors were also to deposit their passports in court.

Shekarau; a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Bashir Wali; and Mansur Ahmed appeared before Justice Zainab Bage Abubakar.on six counts of conspiracy and money laundering to the tune of N950,000,000., being part of the $115,000,000, allegedly distributed by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Deizani Allison Madueke for campaign purposes three years ago.

Jang is in court for misappropriation of state funds under his tenure.
