Terrorists Bomb Niger Bridge, Kill Eight in Fresh Attack on Borgu Communities

Must read

Residents of Niger State were thrown into panic on Monday after suspected terrorists detonated explosives on a key bridge linking rural communities in Borgu Local Government Area, killing at least eight people and crippling movement in the area.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of March 23, targeted a vital bridge connecting Wawa and Luma communities. The route serves as a major corridor linking Luma, Babana, and Agwara—an essential passage for traders and residents, particularly those heading to the popular Monday market near the Babana border.

The incident marks a troubling escalation in tactics, with fears that the targeting of critical infrastructure could hinder military access and isolate vulnerable communities in parts of the state already grappling with insecurity.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the victims – seven passengers and a driver – were traveling from Nuku and Woro when their vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) planted on the bridge. The resulting blast destroyed the vehicle and killed all occupants instantly.

Security officials say the explosion significantly damaged the bridge, effectively cutting off access between several communities and raising concerns about economic disruption and emergency response delays.

Police authorities in the state confirmed the incident. The spokesperson for the command, Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed that the attack was carried out by suspected insurgents believed to be operating from the nearby Kainji National Park.

According to him, the incident was reported around 6:30 a.m., though the explosion itself occurred hours earlier, at about 2:00 a.m. He explained that the use of explosives to destroy infrastructure suggests a deliberate attempt to disrupt both civilian movement and ongoing security operations in the region.

Security agencies have since intensified surveillance and clearance operations across affected areas, while efforts are underway to assess the full extent of the damage.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate that additional explosions were heard along routes between Rafingiwa and Babana, as well as Woro and Kaiama. The developments have triggered fear among residents, many of whom are reportedly fleeing their homes amid concerns of further attacks.
