Unidentified gunmen on Tuesday attacked the convoy of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, at the residence of former Edo State Governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, in Benin City.
The attack occurred as Obi and his entourage arrived at the Benin residence of the elder statesman for a scheduled courtesy visit. Eyewitness accounts and video clips circulating online showed a chaotic scene as gunshots rang out, sending residents and supporters scrambling for safety.
Media aides under the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) confirmed the incident, stating that the former Anambra State governor and other political leaders present were unharmed.
“We unequivocally confirm there was an attack on Mr. Obi’s convoy. Thankfully, he and members of his team are safe,” the statement read.
Photographs shared online showed spent cartridges allegedly recovered from the scene. In one of the images, Obi was seen holding up what appeared to be bullet shells, expressing concern over what he described as a “deeply troubling development.”
Speaking briefly after the incident, Obi condemned the attack, describing it as shocking and unacceptable—particularly given that it occurred at the residence of a respected political figure.
“It is disheartening that such an act could happen at the home of a leader who has served Edo State and Nigeria with honour,” he reportedly said.
The incident has reignited discussions around a July 2025 controversy involving Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, who had publicly warned Obi against entering the state without prior notification. The warning followed Obi’s visit to a healthcare institution in the state and caused widespread criticism before the governor later clarified his remarks.
Supporters of Obi have linked Tuesday’s attack to what they describe as a pattern of political hostility, though authorities have yet to officially confirm any connection.
POMR has called on security agencies to launch a full investigation into the attack and urged both national and international democratic observers to monitor developments closely.
The Edo State Police Command has not released an official statement identifying the perpetrators or confirming arrests.
