President Bola Tinubu has sympathised with former World Heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, after an auto accident he was in that claimed two lives in Ogun State.

In a statement he personally signed, he wrote, he said:

“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries.

“This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season.

“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride.

“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.

“I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed.”

The British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in the serious road traffic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway this morning, leaving two people dead and others injured, officials and eyewitnesses confirmed.

The accident occurred at about 11:00 a.m. along the Makun axis near the Sagamu Interchange — one of the busiest stretches of Nigeria’s key highway connecting Lagos and Ibadan.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and eyewitness accounts, Joshua was travelling as a passenger in a Lexus SUV (registration KRD 850 HN) when the vehicle lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle at high speed and collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

Preliminary reports indicate:

• The SUV was carrying five adult males, including Joshua.

• Two occupants died instantly at the scene, their bodies later taken to Livewell Hospital Morgue in Sagamu.

• Joshua sustained minor injuries and was conscious after the crash. He was immediately taken to a hospital by his security team.

• Two other passengers escaped without serious injury, though one was also reported wounded and evacuated for treatment.

Responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Police, and the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency were at the scene shortly after the incident, cordoning off the area and managing traffic flow. Police confirmed that a thorough investigation into the causes and circumstances is underway.

FRSC officials stressed that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, particularly during the busy festive travel period, remain leading causes of fatal accidents on Nigerian highways.

In an official statement, the Ogun State Police Command extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public of ongoing efforts to determine the full cause of the crash.

The Ogun State Government described the accident as deeply unfortunate, comforting bereaved families and urging motorists to exercise caution on high-speed corridors.

The high-profile incident comes just days after Joshua’s knockout victory over American influencer and boxer Jake Paul in Miami, keeping global attention on the athlete’s wellbeing and future plans.

Multiple international outlets report that the 36-year-old former world champion, though shaken, is expected to recover from his minor injuries. He was seen conscious during rescue efforts and is under medical care at an undisclosed facility.

Further updates are anticipated as investigations continue and more details about the victims and exact sequence of events are released by authorities.
