The Adada State Movement, a leading group advocating for the creation of additional states in the South East, has called on all federal, state, and regional stakeholders to strictly uphold constitutional provisions as discussions on state creation continue.

In a statement signed by Ike Abonyi, Director of Media and Publicity, the group expressed appreciation to the National Assembly and political leaders from the region for what it described as their “thoughtful response” to recent developments surrounding the issue.

“We commend the mature approach taken by concerned stakeholders despite provocations in the media, particularly from Senator Ned Nwoko who is not from the region. Senator Nwoko has been attempting to rewrite history, create confusion, and deny the South East its rightful request for equity and justice, the statement said.

The Movement praised the maturity displayed by stakeholders despite what it characterized as media provocations. It criticized remarks attributed to Senator Ned Nwoko, stating that, in the group’s view, his comments do not reflect the interests or historical realities of the South East. According to the statement, the senator’s position has contributed to “confusion” in the discourse around state creation—an issue the Movement insists must be approached with fairness and constitutional fidelity.

Reiterating the legal framework for creating new states, the Adada State Movement noted that such decisions cannot be made through media engagements or individual declarations, but must follow due parliamentary procedure as outlined in the 1999 Constitution.

The group also thanked the National Assembly’s joint constitutional amendment committee for acknowledging what it called longstanding injustices in the region. It commended South East federal lawmakers for their efforts to maintain harmony and ensure that any proposed new state meets all constitutional criteria.
