The House of Representatives has strongly condemned Tuesday’s deadly ambush on the convoy of Hon. Jafaru Mohammed Ali, the Member representing Borgu/Agwara Federal Constituency of Niger State, describing it as a “cowardly and tragic assault” on democratic representation and national security.
The attack occurred along the Lumma–Babanna Road in Borgu Local Government Area, a remote corridor near the Nigeria–Benin Republic border notorious for violent bandit incursions. According to reports, heavily armed assailants opened fire on the convoy while the lawmaker was en route to Babanna for a constituency engagement.
At least one soldier attached to the convoy was killed, while several others—including aides and the driver—sustained injuries. Multiple vehicles in the convoy were riddled with bullets and extensively damaged in the attack. Some local security sources, however, claimed that as many as six security operatives may have lost their lives, though official confirmation is still pending.
Witnesses said the gunmen, believed to be part of a cross-border armed group with links to extremist factions operating in the Sahel region, fled into the forest after a brief exchange of gunfire with security escorts.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the House Spokesperson, Hon. Akin Rotimi Jr., the Green Chamber expressed “deep shock and grief” over the incident, mourning the gallant operatives who “paid the supreme price in the line of duty.”
“This unfortunate event underscores the risks lawmakers and security personnel face in ensuring that representation and public engagement reach every part of Nigeria, no matter how remote,” the statement read.
“The House extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen security operatives, prays for the swift recovery of the injured, and calls on relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Rotimi reaffirmed the House’s commitment to supporting the Executive and security agencies with “every necessary legislative backing” in the ongoing national effort to combat terrorism, banditry, and other forms of criminality.
Security analysts have warned that the Lumma–Babanna axis, bordering Benin Republic, has become a flashpoint for transnational criminal networks, including bandits and extremist groups exploiting Nigeria’s porous borders and difficult terrain.
In reaction, Niger State Police Command and military authorities have reportedly launched a joint clearance operation in the area to track down the attackers and secure the region.
As of press time, Rep. Jafaru Mohammed Ali was reported to be safe and receiving medical attention for minor injuries, alongside other aides.
The House is expected to debate a motion on national security and rural infrastructure in its next plenary session, with renewed calls for greater protection for public officials and communities in Nigeria’s border regions.
